Re: Lost One Of The Good Ones Yesterday
Joe: the best way that I can think of to honor your dad is to live your life in a way that you know would make him proud. You were truely blessed to have your father for so long. My Dad, also a WW2 vet, died in 2003, I think about him almost everyday. I just hope that I am half the father to my son ...

Re: Henry Big Boy calibers
Joe: We weighed the rifles last night on a Detecto brand rotating dial scale (a food scale, it is only accurate to 1/10#); according to our scale, the 44 and 45 both weighed 8.6 pounds and the 357 was a little heavier at 8.8 pounds.
One thing about the weight, recoil is mild in all three calibers.

Re: Bolt action stock question
I wouldn't worry about it splitting under recoil as long as it is inletted so that the action isn't a force fit. That stock looks just like the Fajen stock on my 03-A3 Smith Corona. It was already sporterized when I bought it back in 1988. Mine has an aftermarket hinged floorplate and trigger guard ...

Those ARE neat! I have an H&R in 32 S&W (not 32 Long, like yours) but the nickle finish of mine is 50% at best. I also have two 38 S&W top-breaks; a blue Iver Johnson Safety Automatic Hammerless and a nickle, with pearl grips, Empire State Arms. I need to figure out this picture posting ...

Re: Henry Big Boy calibers
A friend of mine has the 357, 44 and 45 (bought one for himself and for his two sons). The only problem that I know he has had is with the 357; flat nose bullets tend to hang up when chambering. I loaded some XTPs for him and they have chambered everytime, so far. As far as i know, he hasn't had any...

OT - Reduced loads for 7x57 1901 Rolling Block
When I first got my 7mm rolling block, about 25 years ago, I shot factory ammo through it. Mostly Remington 140gr SP Core Lokts. It was fairly accurate; 1 1/2" - 2 1/2" at 100 yards. A couple of years later I read that it should only be fired with reduced loads... oops. Now, I only shoot r...

I think that "Old Joe" is pretty lucky to have grown old. Most of us who shoot Lee-Enfields are familiar with drill rifles. I wonder what he thought those extra holes in the receiver were for?

Re: OT What .22 semi-auto pistol
I agree that the Rugers ae a good choice. I have a Mark II Bull and an old tapered barrel Standard. Both are very good shooters. I had a S&W 422 6" with adjustable sights (was stolen back in 1990) that was almost as accurate as my Rugers. I also had an old Colt Challenger that looked great ...

Re: OT - book on 'old men' getting away with more flirting...?
About ten years ago, when I was only 46, I had an office job where I had to wear a coat and tie everyday. There was a very attractive younger woman that used to stop and talk to me every morning for a few minutes. I was (and still am) very happily married but still it was flattering that she would s...

Re: OT - Savage 340/Springfield 880(?) reviews?
I have a Savage 340 in .223 that in spite of an incredibly heavy trigger is fun to shoot and accurate enough for coyotes. Since you are looking for old school, you might consider an H&R Model 157 (full Mannlicher style stock) in 22 Hornet. Mine is accurate enough for squirrels at 50 - 75 yards (...

I wouldn't write off PMC brass. I've reloaded PMC 30-06, 30-30 and 44 Mag and didn't have case failures any higher than virgin Remington or Winchester brass.

66GTO In 1959-60 we were stationed at Clinton-Sherman AFB, Burns Flat/Elk City, Oklahoma (long closed). As I recall it was a SAC base that flew B52s. When a B58 flew in, my dad took me to see it on the flight line. What made a real impression was how LOUD it was when it took off. At that time, my da...

Re: OT: What Are YOU Going To Buy For The Centennial ? ?
I would like to have a Colt with the 1911-2011 logo, but I want it to be traditional with the same high polish blue that my 1954 Commander has. Arched main spring housing, wide spur hammer, no beavertail, no extended anything. Just a classic look for THE classic handgun. I have a Kimber Custom (orig...

Re: OT - Grumman F3F-2
I've been reading the forum for quite awhile. It took a non-gun topic to encourage me to post. My dad was a career USAF weather officer. 1962-66 we were at Chanute AFB, Rantoul, Ill. I have been inside most of the aircraft that used to be on display on the grass around the base. My favorite then was...
