It's no secret that I love old SAAs. Especially COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTERs which is the caliber mark for 44-40. I've had the etched panel guns but I like the roll mark which started in 1890. Frog strangling deluge aside, the advantages of a .40 s&w revolver are many ! Starts with "4"..... powder cost efficient case capacity......ubiquitousness of both bullet selection and factory ammo availability. Current .40 factory ammo prices half the price of .380 and a third less than 9mm luger.

The 1851colt has been mentioned. When the mason-richards colt was submitted for the army trials in 1872, it had the 1860 gripframe but the accepted 1873 version had the, more or less, 1851 shape and dimensions. Obviously someone at the top preferred the 1851 to the 1860.....
