I have had very good success with RL 19 shooting 250 Barnes Originals and 200 gr Hornady. I am at the point where that's probably all I will use for the 348. The 4350s and 4831 have been dissappointing out of my rifles, as far as accuracy is concerned.

I would start at the Remington Society of America forum, in the pre-1898 rifles section. There are a few resident RB experts in there, including Roy Marcot, who seems to be the most prolific author on the RBs, at present.

I have (and shoot) a No. 1 Sporting in 45-70, all original. Fun rifles.

It's hard to tell for sure, but it looks to me like the the original swivel bases are still there and someone installed the permanent rings(?) in the bases. I know I'll be gutted and thrown into salt water for saying this, but on a once in a lifetime hunt, do you want to be stuck with a short range rifle? If it's an octagon barrel or a standard weight round barrel, anything less than 26" would be suspected on having been cut. Lightweight 45-70s under 22" are suspicious, and lightweight 33 wcf under 24" are suspicious. If you fine a barrel shorter than these you should take a good look ...

Western was early pre-Redfield. You're fortunate that Redfields are less expensive than Lyman's. Everywhere else in the country a Redfield brings a huge premium.
