I've been working for and with engineers.......One other thing is true: You can NOT get a YES or NO answer from them...ever! Try me...ask me a question 8) Some of these are new - some have been around a while. It's always good to laugh at yourself. I will say, though, that the bad wrap comes from e...

Re: BLR Takedown - What would Jeff Cooper say?
As we all know, the leveraction is faster than a bolt gun for repeat shots in the right hands. Not the BLR. Too long of a lever throw. I didn't know that...can the lever be operated in prone position without canting the rifle? Is it any different/better with a short action vs long action or magnum?

BLR Takedown - What would Jeff Cooper say?
I have been contemplating the new BLR lightweight takedowns. For a few reasons I have delayed a purchase - I am waiting to see if a composite stock version comes out, and I am waiting for answers regarding the viability of a two-barrel set straight from Browning. That aside, this rifle is very close...

Lefever Nitro Specials can be had at a decent price as well - $500 or so. Mine was $350 about 4 years ago and I assume it's gone up a bit. I have another $100 into it getting the chokes modified and a pachmeyer installed and it's a sweet shooter. 80 years old, beautiful case colors, AMERICAN MADE, a...

I wonder if Skinner couldn't whip something up for you. Just a thought. It's about time he strayed from Marlins and started playing with Winchesters anyway. His receiver sight would need to be shortened to clear the extractor and a radius cut in the bottom, then you're in business. Heck, if he didn'...

For you guys down in San Diego, there are many many deer there. Out in the area of Julian, Ramona, and then a little further North over towards Jacumba you can hardly turn around without seeing a deer. I believe parts of that area are walk-in tags too -- or at least they used to be. Huh. Well I don...

Have you tried a fine ivory or red bead yet? The ivory certainly helps in low light. If you lose the bead, you still have a perfectly adequate post. I've never used a red bead. I have a few but I haven't figured out which rifle to mount one on yet. I don't know if they'll be too good in low light. N...

I've hunted with a fiber optic sight on my muzzleloader for many years and have never had a problem. More rain 8) I put a Pachmeyer pad on one of my 71s too, and I've comtemplated trying a firesight. The pad makes range sessions remarkably more enjoyable. I can put 60 rounds through it at the bench, and not really feel it. I was flinchy (and hurting) after 20 rounds before the pad. http://www.hunt1...

She's a beauty. Is this your first 33? I am hopelessly addicted to 1886s and 71s, and have certainly noticed the trend. It's good if you already own a few, but bad if your trying to catch up. I cover the target (POA) with a bead and bisect it with a post. 71 Fan, Nice rifle! :D I am not 100% on this as I am going out of my head but the 40-70 is a 2.4 case so thats all you would have to do is run a 40-82 or a 45-90 case in a 40-70 sizing die. Expensive for the three barrel set? You bet as that 40-70 barrel is going to have to be made from scratch or ...

Thanks everyone for the info. That's what I needed. So can 40-82 ammo / brass be used in a 40-70 rifle? What is the 40-70 wcf, and more importantly, WHY?
I have a Winchester 1886 that originally lettered as a 40-70 but was rebarreled to 33 wcf. I can't find any info on the 40-70 wcf cartridge.
Does anyone know the dimensions and original loading of this cartridge.
Does anyone know why it came about when the 40-65 and 40-82 were already around?
TIA

This is definitely a carbine that got modified, having originally been the confirguration that Winjester showed in the picture.
