Yep...Photobucket has become a Royal PITA, but ad block seems to sort out some of the BS. Rod

Re: My 99

Great guns to be sure, but heavy when compared to my Marlins. I've got a 99 EG from the early '50's in .300 Savage that's a shooter for sure. It was drilled and tapped when I bought it off GB, so I mounted a period correct early Weaver K4 on it. The pic shows the results...as good as a few of my bol...

300 Savage Loads

I've been playing with a Savage 99 in .300 Sav. for a year now and wondered if anyone else has some good loads they'd like to share. This gun, a 1953 EG, shoots extremely well for me. The gun's got real accuracy built into it, and I like the look of that old smooth Savage receiver. The 4x Weaver sco...

Re: your best 45 colt loads

With any good LSWC sized to fit the throats, I like 8.3 gr of Unique with Winchester LP primers for 830 fps from a 4-5/8" Ruger New Vaquero. With the same bullet, 7.2 gr of Winchester 231 or HP 38 does as well and gives me 770 fps from the same gun. Both loads will give me less than 2" gps...

Re: One Bullet, Three Guns, and One Big Pot

I like Lyman's # 429215 gc. It casts in WW 215 gr with the check in place. Superbly accurate in my .44 Smith Model 29 and both of my son's. It also works well in a son's Model 92 Winchester when sized to .429" For the magnums, .430" works well. In my Marlin 336 .44 Magnum, with micro-groov...

Re: Ot - Herters

Geez what catalogues...and the descriptions of products, makes Seinfeld's, J Peterman catalogue items pikers by comparison. I ordered dies for both .222 and .38 special and a new carbide die for the .38 which I still use. Their #3 press, a UPS shade of brown, is still with me after over 50 years...I...

Re: Hero Died

May he rest in peace, he's earned his place in Valhalla. The rattle of small arms through the open side window The tightening in the gut and dryness in my mouth And time slows, the neon golf balls seem to float up at us And slide slowly by...the sound like a zippo closing And the bigger stuff, 51's ...

Re: Marlin .44mag and cast boolits

I've got a Marlin 336 in .44 Magnum with micro groove rifling. It will hold an inch @ 50 yds all day long with a Williams Fool Proof receiver sight on it and jacketed bullets. Winchester factory loads, and my home reloads with Remington 240 gr JHP's as well as Hornady 200gr XTP's all shoot that well...

Just an aside: OLD SAVAGE, that's one heck of a good lookin' knife you post with. Can't say much about the sheath but the blade looks great. Rodfac

Re: Effect of WD-40 left in barrel?

Yep...but each rifle is an individual...that being said, Hoppe's left in the bore overnight (and the rifle stored muzzle down to prevent drainage into the receiver/stock area) will keep it rust free for short time storage. Prior to hunting, wipe it out with a cpl of patches and you're ready to go. I...

Re: Which is the most versatile 44 mag or 357 mag

I'd have to go with the .44. For a couple of reasons. It's good for what ever you're hunting, at least in the lower 48 if you use the proper loads. 1300 fps out of a 6" S&W is really no problem and 1700 fps from a 20" carbine barrel is easy as well (and a whole lot easier to handle rec...

.30-30 using 2400 and cast bullets

Does anyone have information on 2400 with cast bullets in the .30-30. I've got a Model 94 Winchester that I'm experimenting with using a commercially cast 170 gr Gas Check bullet with a flat point. TIA Rodfac

Re: My 336

I've got some experience in the Hi-Power target game and here's my take on refinishing a stock. Per the CMP guidelines and several other equally reliable sources: linseed oil, boiled or plain, tung oil are nice for the wood but don't do much for waterproofing it. If you need it weather proof, use a ...
