I also ran the gauntlet of various brands and models of lever actions, until I bought my first 1895. If I could find a new model Browning or Winchester carbine in a local store for that amount, I would not leave it there. Dave,
You are probably right about the barrel, but Winchesters could be ordered back then w/o the rear sight dovetail. It actually cost more. Look under the forearm at the bottom of the barrel and see if there are any markings.

If you do not know of the Traditional Bowhunters of Florida, you should go to one of their shoots. They have a web site. There are some guys there who are fantastic shooters. Their next state shoot should be in a few weeks in the Ocala National Forest.

A Marlin dated that age should have the non reflective waffle pattern on top of the receiver w/o any screw holes. I would not have it D&T'd. It does look like it has the srew holes for the side mounted receiver sights, which is the way I would go.

Winter is the only time that gobblers really hang out together. In just a short time however, that group mentality will come to an end. Just like us people I guess. You can also use a copper penny - it has to be a pre 70's or 80's issue to be pure copper though. I'll have to look that one (date) up again.
I have found Kroil Oil to be very good for all rust removal and it does a good job of cleaning a barrel also.
