I agree with others who suggest relining it, but not changing anything else. With so much family history lost with a restoration I would never want to not retain it's current appeal. But making it a great shooter wont hurt anything at this point.

A little help please

A few months ago I read a lengthy article concerning the Stevens 44 and 44 1/2 rifle models. Now when I want it I cant find it. It was either in the Rifleman or in a Gun Digest book.

Regarding the gain of weight after quitting, my doctor told me long ago that I could gain a hundred pounds before I would damage my body as much as smoking a pack a day.

Been quit for 34 years now, dont miss it a bit, cant stand being downwind of a smoker.

Look at the top of the receiver on the inside. There should be a flat narrow leaf type spring that is the cartridge guide in the inside top. See if you can find a Civil War reenactment group or forum, they are sticklers for authentic and might be able to find you drawings and specs so you can get one made, or maybe just buy one from a supplier.
