You have good taste in aeroplanes Bryan, I always thought the 24 was a looker. Seeing one uncovered they're impressive as well. Some machines are underwhelming when you see them naked, the Fairchild is well put together.

That looks slick, I've got the NECG peep on mine but it requires a riser block for the standard front sight.

Not a 44 mag but I've got one in 375 wcf and my most used load is a cast 245 over 10 grains Unique ( sound familiar?). It's a fun little rifle.

Thanks for all the replies, seems I had concerns over something that's largely a non-issue. Guess I'll load up the Rossi .44 to replace the AR I usually throw in the truck. I've always had an affinity for the Savage 1907 and Colt 1903 but intentionally avoid them for fear of the rabbit hole journey that would likely follow. An acquaintance once opined that handguns to men are like jewelry to women, and I kind of see the parallel. That said, I wouldn't talk anyone out of buying a CZ75 or Hi Power. I have both and although they're not primary carry guns or even have a specific purpose for me I enjoy using them.

That would be interesting to try, the heaviest I've shot was a 330 Gould sized down to .452 launched at about 1100. No idea of the penetration but I doubt it was like that stomper.

My experience mirrors the Docs on both counts, I find lost things and soon as I buy a replacement, and the Paco tool shrinks groups with bulk ammo by about a third. I've got the multi- diameter 4 hole version but found that .224 works best for most guns.

Eyes and ears always. I had an overpressure round blow in a 1917 Enfield, got a faceful of gas that might've taken my eye if it weren't for glasses. It was that sketchy Korean surplus M2 ball that KB'd a few M1's at Garand matches 20 years or so ago.

I've got 32 rounds remaining of the 240's loaded over 12.5 of HS6 - there were 44 still loaded out of a box of 50 but I ran a dozen through the OM Flattop last Friday morning. They still go where they're supposed to.

I miss those, especially the 240 gr. It was only in the last 10-15 years that I discovered they were discontinued when I went to restock after shooting up the last of my stash.

I use 12.5 HS6 with that bullet though I no longer recall why I dropped the 1/2 grain, but yeah, it's an exceptional load. I use an old dozer tooth for a mid range target and it'll bowl that over more often than a 44 mag does. Probably helped along by that Dwell Time thing the IHMSA guys like.

After this thread started up last year I finally worked up the nerve to try fire lapping. My first candidate was my problem child '85 .44 SBH. I only fired 12 rounds the first outing and afterwards a tight patch still had resistance at the frame junction, so it got 24 more which seems to have fixed ...

I've never lost a base pin latch but I did throw the base pin in 3 shots shooting 200 gr XTP's over 28.5 of H110 in a 44 mag Vaquero. Recoil was pretty brisk, and it also made the magazine tube jump the detent notch on a Rossi 92. I don't shoot that load anymore. :lol:
