I prefer a larger bore with a heavier bullet. My 480 Ruger is great for timber. A 1894 Winchester rifle in 38/55 gets me out to 150 yards plus/minus. A Winchester model 70 claw extractor in 375 H&H covers all other large game.

My Rossi 44 was my favorite lever until I picked up a 480 Ruger, then the 44 moved down the road. My 480R is a delight to carry and shoot and I love the 390 grain hammers that it throws. I fully understand the attraction of the 44, bigger is definitely better.

I would expect a cleaning rod to leave round or circular marks. These look more like someone took a piece of 1/4" hot rolled round and snipped it with a bolt cutter. Mercuric primers were pretty much out of production by 1930, with boxes specifying non-mercuric through the 1950's. I saw such boxes on gun shop shelves in the 1960's, new ammo. I probably still have 20 boxes of mixed calibers.
