Re: New LEVERGUN cartridge?

I finally said enuf! and went back to 2 3/4 Remmie Sluggers.

I just had a bum realization: a 30-30 can't be rebored to 360 BuckHammer. Drat.

Re: New LEVERGUN cartridge?

I'm in a situation that might benefit from the Buckhammer. I grew up a Buckeye, and hunted for several years under the shotgun-only rules. Once I got access to land in Kentucky, I crossed the bridge and haven't gone back in over 20 years. I have a 200 acre farm in SW Bracken County, about 10 miles f...

Re: What to do with a Marlin 336

It's funny you say that. I had not thought of it that way. Bored? I suppose. My youngest just got his first deer as an adult. I've spent every season since 2001 helping my sons. Now I'm looking at a sizeable hiatus until the first grandchild comes online. It's also funny you mention flinters. I was ...

Re: What to do with a Marlin 336

OK, so if I get the general consensus correctly, 307 WIN conversions are dangerous, 30-30 AI is useless, and either you gotta love 30-30 for what it is or you just can't shoot straight?

I thought of that, but why 35 instead of something like .307 WIN?

Re: What to do with a Marlin 336

OK.
So, let's say I leave it alone. What would be a good circumstance for doing a 30-30 AI or 307 WIN conversion? Or has that no longer a good option?

Re: What to do with a Marlin 336

I'd go with the folks that said door # 3 . ps. Is Angus still piping ? I'm thinking more and more like I might just take door #3 too. My hesitancy to shoot 30-30 is wholly based on illogic, but then so is deer hunting, right? Angus? He stopped piping for a brief time-- concentrated on the banjo, th...

Re: What to do with a Marlin 336

The vast majority of folks I tell about this think it's some defect in the hunter. It might be; however, I stopped using the Marlin myself over 10 years ago, because I was tired of shooting deer at reasonable distances and having them just look at me. Granted, we finally got the situation under cont...

What to do with a Marlin 336

I have a Marlin 336. I have a lot of other good deer rifles, and I have to admit I was quite underwhelmed with 30-30 when I tried it on whitetail deer. For a lot of years, it was my sons' first deer rifle. Now they are all grown and shooting 30-06. I'm thinking of doing something with the 336. 1) I ...

Re: Ohio to announce PCR for Deer

Thanks all for your answers. Of all of them listed, I'd probably like the 38-55 or 375 Winnie the best, but I doubt I'll be adding one to the collection soon. If I was sure to be hunting Ohio regularly, that would probably be the way I'd go. I already have a 357 Mag Marlin lever. I'm going to be exp...

Ohio to announce PCR for Deer

Ohio is set to announce that Pistol Cartridge Rifles will be legal for deer season. Frankly, this is about 20 years too late for me. Even though I'm a Buckeye, I've already sunk a wad into 200 acres of good hunting land in KY, Zone 1. However, I'm probably going to get an invite for hunting Ohio, an...

Re: Level crosshairs, what is the secret formula!!

I've got one of those boresighter devices. I put my rifle into a gun vise and I put the arbor of the boresighter down the bore and then go to work trying to get the crosshairs to line up to the grid on the boresighter. When I start, the boresighter or the scope may be off, but there is only one solu...

Re: Why no rifles for Turkey hunting?

What makes turkey hunting dangerous is that a) Most of the morbidity comes from mistaken-for-game incidents. That is, somebody shoots someone at close range thinking they were a turkey. b) Most of the shooters are experienced turkey hunters. These aren't greenhorns doing the work. I've been at it si...

Winchester 1897

This may be an odd subject to bring up, but it's Friday, and I'm bored at work. Y'all know the Winchester 1897, right? I've got one. It was made in 1902, the year Grandpa Whitey was born. Grandpa mowed a neighbor's grass for a whole summer and got it as payment when he was 12. I've hunted squirrels ...

Re: Why no rifles for Turkey hunting?

Safety is probably not a real issue, but safety concerns probably drive the decision. In truth, if you took a 38 target load and shot it at a turkey at, say 20 yards, with a lever 357 with iron sights the trajectory of the bullet would be such that it'd be in the dirt somewhere between 120 and 150 y...

Re: Why no rifles for Turkey hunting?

Why? It's funny, but I was asking that question over at the Turkey and Turkey Hunting Forum a year or two ago, and most folks were vehemently opposed. Some of it was because of safety. A lot of it was believing that it was not sporting You have to remember: Turkey hunters have embraced the constrain...

Thanks all for the welcome. As I said, I've been here for years, quietly lurking and enjoying things. This is just the first time I've been moved to ask a question. BTW: It's a Marlin Lever. My deer hunting buddy was lightening his load in preparation for a move, and I'd always thought a 357 Mag rif...

.357 Mag Rifle for Deer

Greetings from a long-time lurker and a first-time poster. I have come into a 357 Mag Marlin Lever Rifle, and I'm very intrigued by it. Since early fall, I have been carrying it whenever I get away from the house to ward off the critters. I figure 158 grain hardcast SWC will do a nice job on a coyot...
