Re: Sad news about Barrett Firearms
I've still got all my guns. Just bought another one two weeks ago actually, just walked into a shop and gave the guy some money and drive home with a Husqvarna fullstocked model 1640 in .243. I was at the range the same afternoon shooting it. Then I spent all last week trying to shoot a deer with it...

I watched it, I thought the effects and staging of the trench and action scenes excellent, but I didnt care for the contrived the ending. Re: Aging eyes and the 35 Remington
I am having trouble with rear sights, so went to a receiver aperture, and now I am having trouble seeing the front sight clearly unless it is on a 24 inch barrel or further out. So now my beloved .44-40 '92 carbine is unshootable.
I can still shoot a .303 alright, and have a peep sight to put on it.

They made them in .44-40 right up until the factory shut down for the new rebuild a couple of years ago as far as I know, at least you could buy them new over here till then. I cant see the front sight clearly on my 20 inch barreled 92 carbine. I have been shooting this for years. Now I cant use it really. The ones they used to import into New Zealand did not have a safety whereas the ones in the US did at that time, so I think it depends on the market. I make a load for rabbits with my .308 when I go out for any length of time, and it works well: It's a 147 grain FMJ, with 12-14 grains of Universal (or Unique). It is very accurate (single hole groups at 55 yards) and will knock a rabbit over without destroying him. I recall it was around 1600 fps....

Assuming a .223:
I wouldn't use Trailboss, it has weirdly high pressures for low velocity.
I use Unique or Universal and 7.5 grains with a 55 grain will get 2000 fps, and superlative accuracy. I would substitute the 62 grain on the same load no problem.

OK - I did it! After years of thinking I needed a munitions factory to put a crimp under the base of a .44-40 bullet just like the factory ammo has, I have done it with a $8.00 pipe cutter. This has been a goal of mine because the crimp on .44-40 ammo is weak because of the thin brass at the case mo...

That was a favourite rifle from his younger days. I have seen a photo of it, it is a custom 95 with a pistol grip stock. He used to load it with black powder over a smokeless priming.
I gather from my readings that he went from that to using a .30/30, and then to a Springfield rifle.
