I don’t usually suffer that at this latitude, but when we lived in England I sure did. At mid day in late December, one’s shadow was remarkably long and the sun rather dim even on a clear day. I don’t miss that.

Perhaps Sharpe was talking about the original loads as compared to the later, "high velocity" smokeless loads. Whelen's WW-I era book said the 1300 fps BP load could be used on deer, but the 1600 fps smokeless load was a big step up in performance.

Though not on question, I've always thought the '76 a handsome rifle but the '73 rather unattractive--something about the proportions of the side plate, I think. Using the Powley computer, I dreamed up some .30 and .35 wildcats on the .40-60 case.

I know technology is really cool and stuff, but I would think the amount of stretch at firing of a rifle barrel at the chamber would be super-small Strain gauges were developed around WW-II and could be read by the electronics of the era. It's easier with modern electronics, of course. The ratio of...

Wasn't the 44 American the same physical size as the 44 RF only CF? Yes, I had seen your page on pressure test results. It's quite useful information. I would add that I doubt 11,000 psi is the same as 13,000 CUP in the .44-40. In the .357, data shot to the CUP standard is generally faster than that shot to psi. This suggests the older CUP standard is actually highe...
