I live in Simpsonville,SC which is in the upstate just south of Greenville,SC.Two years ago we had a bear running loose in the downtown area.He was never caught or shot but created havoc for several days.

My NEF 45/70 Handi rifle is one of the handiest and most accurate rifles I have ever owned.You will really like yours.I load 300 grain in both jacketed and cast for it.

I haven't used it in a couple of years but it works great.Basically you are using reverse electrolysis to remove fouling.You can build your own for not but a couple of dollars.Here's a build it yourself link.

In the past I killed two deer(at different times) with a .410 slug.Both were shoulder shots and the deer dropped right there.A shot to the head with a pistol as a finisher was necessary in both cases.Point is,a .410 slug will drop a 110 pound animal within 50 yards.Basically it is a low velocity.41 ...

In 1985 I built my own house.Took me nine months.I did all of it even down to the wiring and plumbing.Driving your own nails is fun but a lot of work.I would not take anything for the memory and if given the opportunity would do it again.

I carry either a Smith Model 638 or a .22 magnum North American mini revolver all the time.Sometimes both of them.I just like having a handgun close at hand.I admittedly am no great pistol shot but they are handy to have.

earlmck,you bring up a good point that I had not considered before.Thanks for the insight.As I said before I have had such good success with the jacketed load that I do not feel it is worth my while to pursue the cast load.I have too many other things going on.

Dixie Slug Co. makes an interesting load called a "tri-ball".It is three round .60 balls in one 12 gauge shell.I have some but have not tried them yet.

Every 7.62X54R I have ever had experience with has a .311 bore except the Mosin model 28-30 which reportedly has a .308 bore.To find out for sure ask the experts at:

I have been using Meister hard cast bullets in both my 45/70 NEF Handi rifle and my.44 magnums(both rifles and pistols) for about three years now and have had none of the problems you are experiencing.
