Re: Happy Birthday mack.

Thanks guys! It's 60, another 25 and I may retire. Freezing rain here this morning so it looks like some arena time with my girls, (quarter horses). Won't get a chance to snap a cap until 2012.
Happy New Year!

CB,
My thought would be that if you like it, you want it, and you sort of think you can afford it. Go for it, they aren't making any more and it will cost more the next time you find it. Don't kick yourself sometime down the road over missing it because of a few bucks.

I've got to give Wrangler the edge. Material and mfg quality seems better. I like 13mwz's and the new 47mwz's, in Levis it's the 501s. I also like Wrangler's politics over Levi's, so much so I bought VF stock.

Nice collection Rube! Especially the Walthams. My grandfather was a master watchmaker and engraver at Waltham. If you ever come across one that is marked "GM" on the works or inside case, it is one he reset or repaired for the factory.

Re: Like books?

Love books, try to keep two going at all times. Love stuff by Frank Hibbens, Capstick, Ruark, and of course Louis L'Amour westerns. Wife and kids gave me a Kindle, and it is great. However a good book, wood stove and a glass of a favorite beverage can't be beat. I have found a great on-line book sel...

I use a Koplin (?) atv gun boot, bungee corded to the roll bar. Works OK and you can cover it and lock it as needed. Usually home to a 12ga 870.

damienph How does your GI shoot? I have one I bought new and gave up on, it shoots so low that at 15yds everything hits the dirt at least 30" below point of aim. I tried to contact SA about it but never got a response. Didn't really want to put more money into it so it sits at the bottom of my ...

I think the Turner Falls site was flooded out in '36. They may have become Harrington-Russel after that, there was also a Russel Tool Co. that may have been connected. I need to do some research. Dexter-Russel came later

Re: OT: J. Russell & Co. Green River Works 1834 (carving set)

Dave has got it right, very nice set, and a steal at $30. Carbon steel in the knife blade, 1095 maybe, will take and hold an edge like nothing you can find today, but it will stain. I have my fathers set, almost identical, the stag is lighter colored but well matched, as is yours. I think these were...

Re: OT--They Don't Make Toasters Like They Used To.

Got a toaster that the sides open down on, the toast slides down and turns over when you close it, to toast the other side. Think it's out of the '30s. Still works great, just have to flip at the right time. Coffee percolator is a GE, bought in '69, (avocado green, yuck!), still works great, makes a...

Lastmohecken, Plastic bags can do strange things to horses. We had QH gelding, Reminic stock, great cow horse, sorter, penner, well broke, only thing that ever bothered him was plastic. I think it was the noise, not the sight of it that bothered him. I actually sacked him with a large M&Ms bag o...

A well broke horse shouldn't care what side. I'm on and off from whatever side is convenient. I try to mount from the high side on the trail, I really don't see the need to turn the horse around.

I'm slowly loosing my red speckled ACD "Jack" to diabetes. Can't let him work much at all now or his sugar gets out of control. Once you have had a cattle dog, most other breeds don't quite measure up.

Re: Saddle Ring Leather Wrap

A 30/30 trapper with a rawhide lace loop through the saddle ring hangs on a peg next to my bed, for things that go bump in the night. The ring is not wrapped as such, but the rawhide does keep the ring from wearing a mark on the receivers side.

For aesthetics on a lever gun, I would have to say that I prefer the straight grip. However, I do find the pistol grip is more comfortable to shoot with the heavier recoiling rounds.

Griif, That's impact damage. I see that a dozen or so times a week. The oem castings on EHP/Craftsman are pretty light and can't take much abuse. Silver Streak/Oregon has a HD one that will replace that, pn:82-204, we retail them for about $54 w/shaft and bearings, and they outlast the oem by quite ...
