When studying the ballistics, the short cartridges do not gain much from longer barrels in a closed breech system. The cartridges that can gain a lot are the ones that are longer for the caliber like the .22 Magnum ... .357 Magnum etc. What really improves with going to a carbine/rifle over the hand...

Last June I picked up a Cimarron in .45 Colt. It has 2 cylinders, one in .45 ACP. And the dealer gave me a good deal on the gun and then knocked off 20% because I was a Veteran. I will admit I shoot a lot more 38's than I do Magnums ... but there is just something about the first Magnum that appeals to me ..... of course it was my first centerfire sixgun as a teenager and I am sure that has something to do with it.
