When studying the ballistics, the short cartridges do not gain much from longer barrels in a closed breech system. The cartridges that can gain a lot are the ones that are longer for the caliber like the .22 Magnum ... .357 Magnum etc. What really improves with going to a carbine/rifle over the hand...

Last June I picked up a Cimarron in .45 Colt. It has 2 cylinders, one in .45 ACP. And the dealer gave me a good deal on the gun and then knocked off 20% because I was a Veteran.
