Re: Range Time with the 1911

Pillar if your early RIA came with GI sights, it should have the GI rear dovetail or something very close to it. That's considerably smaller than Novaks rear sights (for the 'Novak cut') so I'll bet you did have some filing to do. If the tenon of the front sight you removed was 0.055", it's definite...

Re: Range Time with the 1911

GI Colts prior to the A1 used a small, basically round tenon. They've been collectible a long time and nobody changes the sights on those. The standard 1911A1 military and commercial Colts, on through the original Series 70, are milled to accept sights with a rectangular .058" tenon. Many copies of ...

Don’t worry about the slow twist - even a 1 in 38” twist will stabilise a 300gr bullet as long as it’s a large diameter (mine likes 0.433 cast pills). we have a marlin 44 mag in the family and that 13:38 barrel WILL NOT stabilize 300Gr bullets. some will, some won't. i still don't know why the vari...

Here's what I would try first; but don't do it if you're not 100% comfortable with it. I would, very carefully with long-nose pliers, ease a slip fit wooden dowel in the bore and hold the barrel straight up. Mark the dowel at exactly the muzzle with a pencil. That will at least tell you whether or n...

A 357 carbine has its own charm for reasons obvious to this group. One of my favorite 357 loads was Federal’s old 357A* a 158 grain 357 jacketed softpoint which averaged 1729 fps from a 16” Rossi- more than adequate for deer at wood ranges.
