Re: 1886 Pressure Signs
Welcome to the 1886 45-90 crowd. I bought a new Winchester 1886 45-90 because it provided both the 45-70 and 45-90 and I am very pleased with the performance of both cartridges in the US and Africa. The 90 performs well up into the .458 Win Mag range and it takes all African game (ele, buff, leopard...

We have only a couple of oak trees and the squirrels harvest those acorns except for the few that our Welsh Ponies eat.
We do have several pecan trees, and tried harvesting the pecans the first couple years we lived here, but soon tired of the work and the fact no ones wanted to buy them.

Tutt,
Lets not get into an "arms race" as my 45-90 already shoots the 450 grain NF FPS at 2150 fps and has taken ele, buff, and leopard. One shot kills on the ele and most of the several buff. Hunter was our 86er !

Tutt, My Winchester 1895 .405 WCF is happy (no high pressure} with 300 GR NF at 2250 fps (my fave load) and Woodleigh 400 grain Weldcore or solid ( I used both) . The latter load equals the well known 450/400 DR load of 400 grain Woodies at 2050 - 2100 fps. To minimize concern about peak chamber pre...

When a kid, I compared the MV of the Red Ryder with that of my Daisy pump and bought the pump. The spring in the magazine also kept the BBs from tolling about and bugging me.
I once killed a flushing quail with it and made quite an impression on my hunting buddy.

Re: New Wildcat Project for my 1886 450 2.44"
The standard 1895 .405 load is 300 grain bullet at 2200 fps. That can easily be up to 2400, but is not necessary, especially with NF bullets which took a water buff with one shot. My load for the 400 grain Woodleigh is 2100 fps and does kill Cape Buff. Solids at that velocity will take ele too and s...

Gents, Great idea, but no such new cartridge or such changes to the 1886 are needed as this performance objective was done several years ago by our bullet testing team using my 1886 45-90 and 86ers 1886 45-70. What's also interesting is that the .458 at 2.5" and the 45-90 at 2.4" are 3 grains delta, so I think its probably because the .458 is a bit fatter, as the .1" would not be 3 grains volume." Indeed, In my VV load book, the .45-70 N133 loads come just before the .458 Win Mag loads...
