That stock may be part of the problem. Sometimes, synthetics are actually heavier than walnut or hardwood.

I would be inclined to try a different stock before I traded away a M1A. Then you can sell the stock you don't like on an internet auction board.

I see them regularly at the range I go to. They are popular with skirmishers. I also like the break open feture, and considered buyin one as a "folding camp carbine" However, to use it hunting, it would only be legal during modern cartridge season, in my state. It is somewhat underpowered....

I use a Lee Hand Press even for the 45-70. With proper case lubrication, this is not that difficult. You might want a little more lube than for a 30-30, but not that much more. The spray on type (or even PAM) should be fine.

Are you shooting a lot of cast bullet reloads? Perhaps you are getting a minor amount of lead buildup in the camber area that is just slowly overworking the extractor.

Of course, it is only a theory, at least until you closely inspect your chamber for lead.
