Re: winchester 94 Side Mount
I got that rifle for a very reasonable price about a year or so ago just because it had that mount on it, and the four holes drilled into its side. Once I took the mounting plate off. The blue was in much better shape where it had been protected under the plate. That mount has been on that rifle for...

I have both a modern Marlin 95, and a 1879 Trap-door. One has to be constantly on guard if you re-load your Marlin hot. So far I don't That 40-65 WCF sounds like a custom rifle. If you like the caliber, it may be a bargin. Rolling blocks in 50-70 can be challenging, since most have a larger groove d...

Re: What if anything are the drawbacks to barrel re-lining?
From what I have heard, the Winchester is an excellent candidate for re-lining. You can even buy barrel liners from Brownells in all the Winchester 73 and 92 chambering. You will have to ask others what that may do to the resale value of such an unusual rifle. If you rechamber and rebore the Mauser,...

Re: What if anything are the drawbacks to barrel re-lining?
I do not believve many gunsmiths would want to touch the Mauser. Besides chamber problems, a 7.92mm can easily be fired to get hot enough to melt solder. I know many use hi-temp epoxy now, but the negative results of the past still leave many leary. Actually, it sounds like your Mauser is far from g...

I wsh I remember where I read this, BUT: Supposedly, Swedish ordinance workers were interested in this very thing. They divised a testing apparatus that would fire a standard service bullet out of a standard service barrel, using compressed gas. Therefore, there was no heat, or flame, only friction....

Malamute; That souns like a great idea for the bases. The high blocks are why I never seriously consisered having a forward scope set-up on a lever-gun. The quick detach feature adds a lot to the desirability. The Win 94 with that big Weaver K-4 off to the side is kind of funky. However, picking it ...

That mount will not work with older Model 94 examples that lack the receiver sight screw holes, unless of course, you, or your smith drill and tap two more holes. I don't think the factory started putting them there until the mid 1950s. I have a Win 94 flat band (1947) that I bought at a very attrac...

Terry is right. Ball powders will not butn properly if a certain loading density is not achieved. Go just a little below the starting load, and pressure becomes erratic. Not necessarily dangerous, but accuracy goes to pot. Go too low, and the powder will not really ignite at all, just burn a little,...
