I don't know of any rifle maker who originally chambered a rifle in .40-70SS that wasn't chambered for paper patch bullets. By the time greasers became common the .40-70SS was dropped from most maker's lineups.

I'd be surprised at any bolt gun using the large Mauser 98 type claw extractor ever had an extractor fail. That's one of the finest extractors ever invented, and they seem to be bullet proof.

It could be the threading done to fit the suppressor that made it happen. Possibly the gunsmith got the threaded end slightly off, or threads too tight that constricted the bore. I can't help but wonder why he'd have the suppressor installed and not take the rifle to the range before his hunt to ens...

Again it's spotty or not working at all. Sometimes it doesn't open, other times it opens quickly, but then is very slow to respond. I just give up on days when it's not working.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, and if you can't get to the range then just use a fired .22LR case in the chamber and pull the trigger to check firing pin contact. Seems like you're worried about nothing...
