Bill, I never could warm up to the Ballard - split breach block and all - but in its day it was one of the favorites of target shooters, especially in the Schuetzen game. I believe that Marlin discontinued the Ballard in 1890-'91, so the rifles in this picture would have been around 20 years old or ...

BrentD,

The PC and SB CLA chicken was moved to 40 meters some time ago as some shooters complained of splash-back from the 25 meter targets. The size of the chicken was not increased, however.

OldWin, Though as I said I no longer hunt, I have done so with the .38-55 on quite a few occasions, and the rifle almost carries itself! Hi, Perry, I don't see them on Winchester lever guns enough to have a good idea as to price. That said, I would guess about $500 at least. In addition to the set trigger mechanism itself, including a separate sear and sear spring, you would need the correct lower tang, hammer and mainspring -- and p...

OldWin, You are surely welcome! And I enjoyed posting the pics again. I agree about the balance of the extra lightweight rifles. When I first hefted that .38-55, I was amazed at how good it felt. As Steelbanger has posted, the RCBS 180 grain bullet drops heavy. Checked and lubed, mine weighs 195 grains. I, too, use mine for silhouettes, and the rams fall most of the time.

My experience with a Hoch mould, unlike yours with your nose pour moulds, is that once the mould was up to temperature it produced bullets with gleaming, square bases with boring regularity.

For a while I shot a Hoch 550 grain bullet in .45-70 at BPCR silhouettes. The mould cast a beautiful bullet. As with most nose pour moulds, you have to have keep the melt hot. I had to run mine at 800 degrees to get proper fill-out. But then a friend lent me a Paul Jones Creedmoor mould, and it shot...

The Hex sight is an interesting concept, Bruce, but the location of the rear sight on the barrel of the long gun gives up one of the greatest advantages of an aperture sight, a long sight radius. I'll take thirty to thirty-six inches, if you please.
