Re: OT-2 interesting old photos:Shooting El Paso, Browning shop
Rangerider, would you mind if I copied the image of Browning's bench to my computer? It reminds a lot of my grandfather's old shop and it is just plain cool. Thanks,
Eric

Re: How many here are the do-it yourself on most things types ?
I'm one of those who does things that need to be done. I can fix most anything I own (except this computer) and when I have a desire for something I generally just make it. I have worked in traditional wooden boat building, high end custom composites, and every other male in my family is a tool and ...

Re: OT: Where's the love for the .41 magnum
I also love my 41 mag. It's a model 58 Smith, the ugly sister of fixed sight N-frames. With the Kieth 220 gr it will shoot point of aim with loads ranging from 950 fps-1300fps. I carry it for work and whenever I feel like just messing around in the woods. I've taken a good amount of game with it as ...

Re: guess what i had in my hands today
First of all, way cool. The bubble level is used to make sure you aren't canting the rifle to one side or the other. It's just another aid to make sure the rifle is held the same for every shot. You can still get sights with a level and I have seen them a couple of times on repro Sharps rifles. Neve...

Re: So What do you do with an 1886 Winchester in 40-82 Caliber?
Get some brass (available from Bertram or Buffalo Arms, last time I checked), load up some ammo, and shoot that old rifle. My grandfather had an'86 in 40-82 and he always thought it was a great cartridge. He always said it quite flat shooting compared to a 45-70 or the old 50-70 and was wicked on de...

Re: So what's on your firearms bucket list?
There aren't many firearms that I'm not interested in but the real wish list is pretty short. Rifles- Model 71, Left handed 404 Jeffery from any quality maker, 50-70 Allin conversion Trapdoor, 40-82 Highwall. Handguns- S&W Triplelock, Merwin & Hulbert Pocket Army, Colt pre-Woodsman .22 Auto ...

Re: Gunsmoke Trivia
I believe James Arness got his limp when he wounded during WWII. I read somewhere they used him to check the depth of the water in different places due to his height. Regardless, Gunsmoke is my second favorite show (Rifleman with Chuck Connors beats it) and this thread is a fun one.

Re: The case for solid (FMJ) bullets.
When I was 18 my only centerfire rifle was a surplus Mosin-Nagant and I shot corrosive FMJ surplus ammo exclusively. I took a lot of coyotes, feral dogs, and a couple of deer with it (neck shots on the deer and coyotes, dogs anywhere I could when they were running at or away from me). Two years ago ...

Sounds to me like they ain't worth the time. By the way, if you post old Kieth hollow point molds on here I'd be first to jump on them. Thank you for all of the replies and opinions! Since I found out I got the job I've been putting about 50 rounds through the 29 a day (I live in the woods and made a shooting range out back*), mostly of the old Skeeter 44 special load so that I'm getting to know that sixgun's trigger well but I want...

There used to be an old timer (I mean real old timer, 90s) up here who had been a police officer in his youth and he had an old Model 8 that had a 15 round detachable mag that was custom modified for police use back in the 30s. I believe his was a 30 Remington, he was a kindly man and let me handle ...

Very cool toy and video. I got to shoot an original Model 1928 once when I was about 14 and my grandfather said I had grin on my face from ear to ear for the next week. Second coolest gun I've ever shot (first is a Smith Triple Lock). Keep on having fun,

OT- Good Quality DA 22 Sixgun
Hello all, I just got a job in Alaska that will be starting next summer where I will be out in the woods full time and I intend to carry my 4" 29 on my hip everyday, thing is I haven't done a whole lot of dedicated DA shooting. I've shot that 29 ALOT but I've never focused on the DA aspect bein...

Re: OT - Which 44 mag handgun would you choose
I'm not terribly fond of the double action trigger pull on the few Redhawks I've shot. It's a personal choice but I'd go with a 29. Can't beat the old N frame. Just my opinion,

I think I'm just going to leave the bluing alone since it's going to be a truck gun but I'm not totally decided. I also have a set of dies already because my grandfather had a rifle in this caliber that he sold, somehow I acquired the dies. My plan is to take it out shooting tomorrow assuming I load...

New 94!
Acquired another model 94 carbine today. 32 Special for only $125, its missing a lot of bluing from the barrel in one spot. I think it sat in an upside down gun rack in the back of a truck or something for many years. I think it will sit in the same position in the back of my truck. The bore is perf...

Re: The 30-30--greater than I thought
I totally concur with your opinion, having a light handy rifle makes my life a whole lot better than lugging around some big boomer. I also feel the same way with the old 25-35 compared to the modern quarter bores (the only possible exception being the 250-3000 in a nice model 99 which isn't exactly...

Re: Walk About Levergun?
My vote goes to a Win 94 Trapper in 25-35WCF. Its a bit of an oddball today but for the U.P. nothing beats it. I feel comfortable shooting anything I might find up here with it, choice shots, and good reloads. From bunnies to black bear, the old 25-35 will get the job done.

Re: Loading for my Marlin Guide Gun.
Hi there, I use 51.5 grains of 3031 with a 400 gr Speer jacketed bullet or most any 405 grain cast bullet as a general hunting load in my 1895. It's a bit stiff but not a full load or punishing in any way and I have used it on many deer, not to mention a couple of black bears, with excellent results...

Marlin one piece ejectors?
Hi there, I've had a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 for about 8 years now, maybe 12-13,000 rounds through it and I've never had a problem with the ejector despite using the rifle in some of the least hospitable conditions this side of Alaska. However, I've met several people who have one piece ejectors from W...

Re: Semi-OT Cast Bullet Hardness
Hi there. One option that I have been playing with is casting bullets that have a pure lead nose and wheelweight back ends. Just make yourself a measured dipper for pouring in the pure lead then top it off with the wheelweight alloy. You do have to be quick about it though to get a good "weld&q...
