I'd recommend one of the "bull" style front sight inserts if it is a Lyman 17A. And, tightening up that rear sight, as 20cows said, that alone will really mess up a group.

As for the sling, I'm not familiar enough with them to advise.

For kids I like the soft foamy thing under a pair of muffs sized to fit properly. I love to see kids at the range and shooting, but... ear and eye protection is a 1st priority before any fun can be had.
