Re: 82nd anniversary of the bombing of Darwin

Glad to bring you a bit of Australian History! One thing I forgot to mention was that the fighters defending Darwin were from the 49th Fighter group USAAF and they suffered heavy casualties trying to intercept the waves of Japanese fighters and bombers. After this raid it felt like invasion was immi...

Cheers Samsi! It was a dark time for Australia, with the fall of Singapore the entire 8th Division 2nd AIF had been captured by the Japanese, Timor and the Dutch East Indies had fallen and the invasion of Papua New Guinea was about to begin. The majority of our combat troops along with the bulk of o...

82nd anniversary of the bombing of Darwin

On 19 February 1942 mainland Australia came under attack for the first time when Japanese forces mounted two air raids on Darwin. The two attacks, which were planned and led by the commander responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor ten weeks earlier, involved 188 attack aircraft which were launche...

Re: Adjusting front sight on my Marlin M1895 Cowboy 45/70

Hopefully will be ok, I usually don't shoot further than 200 metres. I am going to try out a load using a 350G flat nosed bullet of .459 diameter and start with 60G of FFG black powder. I agree, the Marlin Cowboy is a fine looking rifle and very comfortable to shoot as well.

Adjusting front sight on my Marlin M1895 Cowboy 45/70

Finally got around to adjusting the front sight on my Marlin Cowboy 45/70. Last sunday was our club Christmas shoot and sausage sizzle so I took my 45/70 along as it has been consistently shooting to the right since I picked it up. A mate bought along his tools so we could make the adjustment, did n...

G'day Bill, I am using SPG bullet lube ( I pan lube the bullets). Not too much leading but I only fired 10 shots, fouling was about medium I would say, the bullet has one large and one small grease grove ( I will nick out to the back shed in a bit and get a photo of the bullet). I am happy with the ...

No, I haven't slugged the barrel, really should do that. It would be useful if the firearm manufacturers published the actual bore dimensions (or at least the approximate range), would make it easier for mechanically challenged blokes like me!

It was our club day last Sunday (Sydney Colonial Muzzle loading Club) and as we have BP breechloading events as well as muzzle loading I took along my Rossi M1892 rifle in 44/40. Looks like a great event!, thanks for the post.

Here is a photo of myself at a gathering at Lithgow, NSW a few years back, it was a speed shooting event hence I am shooting holding my ramrod. A bit warmer than the Primitive Biathlon, it was around 100F on the range!

It was good to see the march in Sydney again after 2 years of covid! Over 15,000 veterans marched and there was a very big crowd watching. My thoughts today are with my Uncle Ray, a pioneer in the 9th Division AIF, served in Tobruk, New Guinea and Australian Occupation Force Japan.

That is one fierce looking critter! The Aussie version is a lot cuter (although if you corner them they can do considerable damage with their claws and teeth). Had to stop giving them treats as the place was getting overrun with them every night!

Mate, hat off to you, a fantastic job on those labels and cartridge boxes. Can I ask, are any of your cartridge boxes made all from cardboard? I had a go at doing this for 44/40 WCF black powder loads and it took a fair bit of trial and error.

Thanks TraderVic, Pom or Pommy is Australian slang for someone from England. It dates back to at least the 1840's and I have heard one explanation being it comes from the term "Prisoner of her Majesty", but there is a lot of argument about it's origins.
