Needed to find a decent grouping 45-70 load for our upcoming IHMSA match where we also shoot lever guns at the big bore targets.
Found two loads that grouped reasonably at 50 yards.
This load is a 325gr gas checked bullet over 14.0 gr of Trail Boss.
This load is a 405gr bullet designed for a gas check but with the gas check not fitted (getting hard to obtain and quite expensive)
Going to try both loads, hope to get sight settings before the match.

Gas checks are getting pretty pricey and by the time shipping has been paid it makes things costly if you shoot a lot. Also lots of suppliers such as Lock Stock and Barrel no longer ship to Canada.

Pete, that's good shooting. Looks like your rifle likes the trail boss load.
I wonder about leaving the gas checks off. I worry about flame cutting same as I worry about bevel base bullets inviting flaming around the base. Do you think there's any substance to that worry?
I've been thinking that as hard as the bullets I shoot are, and as moderate as the velocity is, there's no real reason for the gas checks, and a plain flat base should be perfect.
