.38-56 Winchester loading data wanted..............

Post by cat1870 »

Hello all,
I am new to this forum & am looking for smokeless loading data for my Winchester 1886 in cal. .38-56 using cast bullets.
My rifle has a new barrel with a groove dia of .376 & twist of 1:18.
My dies were made by RCBS.

Thanks in advance.

I have 2 1895 Marlins for 38-56. I take 45-70 brass & run it thru
38-56 dies. It is best to use a sizing die wax like Imperial on your
brass. You will to trim the brass down to the correct length for
38-56. A good source for this is "Cartridges of the World" By
Barnes. My load is a 265 cast bullet with a gas check sized to
.381 & 33 grains of IMR 3031 gunpowder. Very accurate load.
Redding carries 38-56 dies which I use & are reasonably priced
than RCBS.

Original black powder velocity for the Winchester 38-56 with a 255 grain cast bullet was 1,395 fps. Venturino has published a load of 20 grains of 5744 under a 255 grain cast bullet for 1,382 fps. Snooky Williamson has published a load of 27.5 grains of IMR 4198 under a 255 grain cast bullet for 1,650 fps.

I have a nice old Marlin 1895 in 38-56 . My old rifle was made in 1897 and is in very nice shape inside and out !

Anyway I only shoot cast in this old guy ! And they are all bullets I cast myself . For brass I purchased 40 pieces of 38-56 "Quality Cartridge" brass from Midway . Think it set me back about $60 two years ago .

My favourite bullet to cast for this rifle is the Lyman #375449 , this is a 264 grain FN GC design . I cast mine from plain old wheel weights and lube in a .379" die while lubing with Thompson's Blue Angel .

With this bullet I like to use 20 grains of XMP5744 and a CCI200 primer .

This load has performed very well on paper for me with open sights out to about 80 yards . I didn't bother trying at 100 yards as the areas I'll hunt with a rifle like this are usually 60 yards or less . I did however clang the 100 meter bore at our club a few times that day !

In the 2006 season I was fortunate to take a doe whitetail at a stepped off 28 yards . I cheated a little and shot her in the head so obviousely she dropped on the spot !

The RCBS 37-200GC works pretty well in this rifle also , but for some reason I prefer this slightly heavier bullet !
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !
