A short hunting trip. OT but still guns.

Post by jnyork »

I missed the first four days of my pronghorn season due to family activities, so I managed to sneak out there late yesterday afternoon. Got all set up in my favorite spot in the sagebrush about 4:30 PM . Waited around till about 6:30 and was beginning to wonder when this little buck came down the hill and wandered over to me. Smoked him up once, put a ball through his ribs about 3" back from where it should have been, didnt kill him but he took about 2 steps and went down to his belly with his butt to me and stayed there looking around. After a minute or so it became apparant that he was not going to fall over so I quickly reloaded and waited until he raised his head a little and shot him in back of the neck. This is the first time in many years I have had to shoot twice and it distresses me some but that's hunting. Rifle was a .50 caliber flintlock DGW Tennessee Rifle, 70 grains FFFG, patched round ball. Distance by my rangefinder was 51 yards. Managed to get him cleaned and skinned before dark but just barely. Got back to camp, plumb dark out, quick sandwitch and off to bed, went to sleep listening to God's Dogs nearby having a songfest. All in all, a great afternoon.

Very Nice..! Sounds like you've got one "Honey" of a sagebrush that you hide behind each year. I sure wish I could put my flinty to good use.

What's Pronghorn taste like..? And don't say chicken... :?

Nope, not at all like chicken! Has its own particular flavor, and will depend quite a bit on how you take care of the meat. Some folks like it, some folks dont. We save some little steaks and stew meat, make the rest into jerky.

All of us Easterners thought you had to have a .25-06 to kill a pronghorn! Beatiful gun and a great story.

Congratulations. I've never hunted Pronghorn, but would think going after one with a flinter would be quite the stalk. Good job.
