I had it recommended to me on another forum a couple years back and I took a look and it was a bit much for my interest level. Or I was too dumb to figure it out in a hurry.

I entered data from reloading manuals and actual measurements on projectiles and cases, and in every case it tells me not to load that combo as it's overpressure. In actual load development, I loaded a 170 grain Speer FN bullet in my .32-40 1885 with 15 grains of 5744... based on a QuickLOAD prediction of 19,963 psi, for 1643 fps in my 26" bbl. At the range it actually chronographed an ave. 1446 fps. over 10 shots with a SD of 10 and ES of 40. Gordon's tells me it will be in the neighborhood of 55,000 psi, for a MV of 3,133 fps.

The only manual I have with .32-40 data is my Lyman 45th and it's listed in the back under obsolete cartridges. Their "accuracy" load is 20 grains of IMR 4198 under a 170 jacketed bullet for 1,422 fps. No pressure data. I don't have any 4198 so I can't test anything. But... for comparison purposes, QuickLOAD predicts that load will push a 170 grain Speer FN 1,871 fps generating 26,321 psi. Gordon's predicts that load produces 77,979 max psi and an MV of 3,387 fps.

I'm sorta baffled by these results! I never thought I was too dumb to figure out most things... I'm sure I don't have the manual dexterity to do brain surgery, nor the scientific language to explain it to others, but... medical books are full of pictures...
