Do any of you guys answer the door without a gun…?

Post by AJMD429 »

.
I probably haven’t done that for 40 or 50 years…

With a fenced in yard and dogs outside and living in the boonies, it’s not like people ever knock on our door for the past 40 years, but even before then, and especially when we lived in inner city apartment, no way would I answer the door unprepared…!

Since I've always got my gun on, that's pretty easy. But, we live at the end of a long driveway and outside the city limits. We don't get too many unexpected visitors.

I was about 19, got home from work and saw a feral cat sneaking through the backyard. I got inside and ran to grab my 870. My faithful labrador , Lady knew we were going to have some fun and she was fired up!
As I grabbed the door knob she went blasting by me and ran headlong between 3 Jehovah's Witnesses, knocking 2 of them down the front steps.
Well there I stood, shotgun in hand stammering as they collected themselves while backing to their car.
Lady treed the cat and a load of #2s knocked it out of the tree. She hated cats almost as much as I do.

I don't unless it's after dark, or I just don't feel right about it. But I have one or many close by. Anymore, I always keep a model 94 leveraction in a saddle scabbard on my tractor and side by side, or I strap on a 44 mag revolver on my trail bike or 4 wheeler, and always carry a 1911 Lightweight Commander when I go to town in addition to my Glock 40 cal already in my truck. But I must admit, I guess I am a bit laxed during daylight hours around the house. I might should rethink it, but I live in a very low crime rural area. Bad things can still happen, I know.

Yes, I still do under the same situation.

I don't. I don't even have a gun close except on my night stand. Things are pretty calm in my neighborhood and I haven't felt the need.
It will probably haunt me someday If I don't change my ways. I don't even carry my LCP very often I guess because I have never been in
in a threating situation.

You know, I haven’t been in so much as a fist fight since I left police work.

BUT I know people. I carry a gun whenever I have my britches on.

I don’t want to shoot anybody but a man ought to be ready to do so.

How do we define "without a gun"?

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

Can't get to my door without me letting you through the gate. But I do have a door bell out there for folks that want admittance. If I do let you up to the door, you can rest assured I'm reasonably prepared for any eventuality.

I haven't for about three years since one neighbor went away and the house was boarded up. I have no idea how people in big cities could live in high crime areas. I still have an A-5 close at hand though.

I have two loaded +P 9x18s and a spare mag in the night stand and if someone were to knock on my door between 12 and 6AM I probably would go armed. I have only gone to the door armed once and that was about 40 years ago. I was single and living in a mobile home park when I got a knock on the door at 2 AM. I rolled out of bed (naked) with my loaded Colt New Frontier in my right hand and went to the door with all the inside lights off. I opened the door a few inches and there were two sheriff's deputies there and they asked me if I was so and so. I replied "next door", they thanked me and went there. I expect they were looking for the son of the owner of the next door trailer which was vacant to serve papers. Today they probably would have sent out a swat team.

I live in a low crime area. Wile E Coyote is more of a threat than the humans.

Love that lifestyle/philosophy.
Reminds me of my son (works in forestry).

As piller said, Wiley E Coyote is probably more of a threat than criminals to most of us, and indeed, worldwide, and as streetstar implied, government genocide kills about 7 to 10 times as many (of their own) innocent citizens than do criminals. I remind anyone who thinks government should decide who can own guns of that FACT - it is based not on some cherry-picked data and place and time, but the average of 150 years of recorded genocide and murder rates worldwide. Hard to argue with (see R.J. Rummel - https://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/NOTE1.HTM ).

95% of the time I’m upstairs and if someone knocks on the door instead of going down and opening the door I open the window and ask what they need . A 1911 is within arms reach .
