Ruger 96/22 Followed Me Home

Post by Noah Zark »

UPDATE: Added pic.

Went to a small local show yesterday just for a "gun show fix," it's been a couple months since I've been to one. This one is quite small, but like all small rural PA shows you never know what to expect.

Case in point: There's only so many laps a person can make of three 60' long aisles, and I was fixin' to shove off after a couple hours of mostly hobnobbing. I noticed this one gentleman had been carrying a variety long guns all morning, and now here he comes with a Savage or Winchester 88 . . . no wait, it's a Ruger 96 of some description!

He applies the brakes for an impromptu family reunion that four guys felt compelled to set up, blocking the aisle. I got right behind him and peeped the rollmarking on the barrel -- 22 Long Rifle -- eggsellent!

OK, cutting to the chase, $325 later it's mine, one mag and Bushnell 1.5X-4.5X variable scope and all. There's no blueing wear, rust, or dents to the furniture. Last evening with the scope set on 1.5 I was chasing a 20 oz plastic pop bottle around between 25 and 40 yards with both cheap Remingtons and Mini-Mags. And I found out that 10/22 mags DO fit and function in the 92/22.

I LOVE these fast-action short throw Rugers!

I have always liked my .22 version. I just got the .44 from another forum member, and it is really nice.

. . . NOW I want them ALL . . .

I think it is funny how some don't like them because they don't look traditional. I respect everyone's taste, but the 'funny' part is I wonder how many of those individuals would praise the Savage 99 as a 'classic' - to me they look about the same as far as deviating from the flat-sided, two-piece, tubular-magazine norm. I know the Savage could handle "long, pointy" rounds, and if I wanted a gun for such I'd want one, since the little Ruger isn't long enough ("Ruger .204 Short Magnum" anyone? ), but with the handy overall size, good chamberings, and short lever throw, it is hard NOT to like the Rugers.

Maybe someday I'll get a 39a so I can be "converted" but it will be a challenge.

I'm surprised on how much the price has gone up on those. I bought one from Gander Mountain on close out for $225 a few years ago. But the trigger pull was so heavy that the kids had to use 2 fingers to shoot. Well the culprit was the trigger return spring. I replaced it , the little one behind the trigger , with a lighter one and went from a 7 lb trigger to a 4lb. I also bought a 10/22 stock on ebay , inletted it with a dremel and cut it down for the kids. So the original stock sits in the box. I thought the lever would save me ammo verses an auto with my son , but he levers it plenty fast.
