three levergun day PHOTO UPDATE

Post by Grizz »

But wait, it gets better. My younger son is visiting before he returns to school. A friend of his is visiting us. She is Japanese, a translator student at the Monterey Institute of something or other where they're both working on Masters degrees. She has never touched a gun.

Last night I got some out and explained the four rules and demonstrated them and explained how to clear the action on the leverguns.

Today we drove into the forest with a Marlin 39 Centenial, a Winchester Ranger Compact in .357, and of course my Marlin 1895 GS. And of course a Smith 66 that I carried open, and my RedHawk. The normal running mates all tucked into their kennel.

And speaking of a kennel I took Chico, my two year old English Springer Spaniel that coaches from just forward of and below the barrel when you take too long to give him a bullet to chase.

Here's Elias demonstrating to Marie.

We had a couple of pop bottles and a spinner for the .22. I fired off the PileDrivers to alert the neighbors that the range was hot, and we proceeded to give Marie specific instructions. Took her one shot to get ranged and then watch out. After many refills and breaks to allow others to have a chance she got the permanent grin of the smitten. She allowed as how she didn't expect it to be SO MUCH FUN! She got good right away at flipping the swingers up and then knocking them back down. She had no idea that it would be SO MUCH FUN.

And Elias coaching Marie.

I love teaching women to shoot !! Note that We started her shooting offhand. The gun was heavy for her, but she troopered on and got lots of hits on the plastic pop bottle she was aiming at.

Elias helped me to dispense with a bunch of misc. +p .38 spcl that needed melting. We had shot a bunch of it when Marie allowed as to how she wanted to try the Winchester. Now, she is very tiny and the guns are heavy for her, so she learned a sitting position to stabilize the gun. She mostly shot offhand but I think it was a strain for her. She got a good braced sitting position and I handed the Winnie to her. She sets up exactly like the .22, takes deliberate aim and nails the bean can. Then she proceeds to roll it uphill with four or five follow up shots. And her huge smile got even bigger. And it was SO MUCH FUN !! Emphasis hers.

Later she discovered that there are dozens of magazines that cover the topic of her new hobby.

We got to sight-see, joke about life, run the dog, shoot the guns, enhance a young lady's world view, demonstrate our zeal for our freedoms, share good food and enjoy all the minutes of the day.

God is very good, and we hope everyone had as good a day in your own ways.....

For a generally "non-gun" society, the Japanese tend to become "gun people" very quickly... much more quickly than many "non-gun" "whites".

There is a Japanese Girl's School in Spokane WA... and somehow the girls always ended up at a gun range.

I know of the fun you had!

Several years ago I took a couple of visiting Japanese employees, from my wife's company, shooting. As we drove to the club they asked how many firearms I was allowed to keep at the club. When I told them that they were in the back of my vehicle you should have seen their eyes.

We shot bolt, lever, pump, and semi auto .22's, in the indoor range. THEY shot about a full brick of ammo and wanted to keep every target as a memory/proof/etc. I actually received thank you emails.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Thanks for the pictures Grizz, nothing like seeing youths enjoying a day at the range. I too love taking Japanese nationals to the shooting range, they LOVE doing stuff that's SO taboo in their own society. There's an indoor range in Waikiki and the majority of shooters are Japanese tourists. Japanese LOVE guns. My son watches Japanese anime shows and the details they put into making the guns look real, and the characters knowing how to operate them is much better than Hollyweird does, slide goes back, case ejects, they run out of ammo, and actually reload in the heat of battle. I think that anime shows may be fueling the Japanese fascination with firearms.

Good job, Grizz, If only everyone out there would perpetuate the sport we wouldn't be in the court battles we are.

Shooting seems to be very fascinating for many Japanese. It probably due to the lack of it in their home country. I've introduced a number of vistors and immigrants from Japan to shooting. Without exception, they enjoyed it. A couple have become regulars at the range. I've heard that some Japanese tourist go to the Philipines and Hawai primarily to shoot.
