PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
Has anyone ever had any problem with CCI primers in the new Winchester 86. I got some old cci's from my OLD MAN. They only fired on 2nd trigger pull, but they fired. I wonder if he was playing games. (HAHA) I know he wouldn't do that.
Just wondering if anyone else had primer issues w/ those new 86's.

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
If it has a safety, the problem is not likely the primer - it's a weak rebounding hammerspring.
My 2001 1886 took 2+ strikes to fire some OEM Winchester ammo.
I'm getting the guts replaced as we speak.

What's the fix???
Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
I had the same problem with my 1886 of the same year of manufacture.
I was using winchester large primers. I just carried on shooting it. After about 60 rounds the problem went away, and has not occured since. Many others have had the same problems. I think the problem in my case, may have been thick assembly lube in the firing pin area.
The old board had information on this problem.

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
The Winchester 1886 TD----mfd in 1999 with rebounding hammer and tang safety,---it's new and unfired. Should I send that thing to a smith and overhaul it before I even use it, or is the umpteen boxes of factory ammo I have in every bullet weight and manufacture brand going to work? Some praise their guns totally, others cuss them, others overhaul them with new parts. I hate anything that is not reliable, just wish I knew if I had a piece of manure setting in the safe, or is it a reliable rifle made by a good company, or what? Lots of talk about these guns, I almost wish I had not bought it. My Browning 86 fires and shoots straight, and yes it does kill, but some guys talk of that Winchester as if it's going to dissapoint me for sure.

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
The "fix" is a rework to the slightly overlong leg on the forked end of the mainspring strut. Care is need, as the reworker better know what they're about.
IIRC, there's a tutorial on our home page !
I believe it's labeled as Miroku Model 92 fix/mods - but no worries, as the guts are the same, just a different size.

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
I have worked my '86 EL over and it is not a difficult process at all. Light primer strikes were the order of the day with the factory rebounding hammer. Among other things, I installed a Browning trigger/sear, trigger spring and hammer, and also removed the long lower leg from the mainspring fork. End of problems.

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
I have a 1911 that isn't perfectly reliable with Winchester or CCI primers. Try Federal or Remington for a short term fix. They seem to be a little softer.

IF IT WERE MINE I'D TAKE IT APART AND THOROUGHLY CLEAN IT OF ALL THE FACTORY LUBE AND DEBRIS. LIGHTLY LUBE IT AND THEN GO SHOOT IT. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY YOU'LL KNOW WHAT IT NEEDS. NOT ALL THE REBOUNDERS SUFFER FROM LIGHT PRIMER STRIKES.
REMEMBER, DON'T FIX IT IF IF IT AIN'T BROKE.

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
You can certainly use Rem. 2 1/2 primers. I do with almost all of my .45-70 loads. I have owned several of the rebounding hammer 86s and have never had an issue. I wonder if the light primer strikes are due to an improperly seated primer? Could it be that the striker energy is seating the primer fully? Just a thought. Regards. 1886.

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
1886--- Do you use the rem 2 1/2 primers in the hot loads?
My 86 does have alot of brown packing grease. I cleaned it out before I shot it but keep wiping more off the gun.
Maybe that firing pin needs a good cleaning.

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
By hot loads are you suggesting a 400gr projectile at 2000fps? I have done this without issue except recoil quickly becomes a factor. The only issue I have had with the 2 1/2 was a new 86 .45-90 that would actually pierce primers on occasion! I switched to CCI-200 and this went away. You only need enough primer to do the job. Load consistency, accuracy, etc. will tell you if your primer selection is up to the task. Regards. 1886.Sixgun jr wrote:1886--- Do you use the rem 2 1/2 primers in the hot loads?

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
To add to the three links I posted above, Dave Scovill's "Spotting Scopes" article in the November - December 2003 No. 210 issue of Rifle Magazine discusses the tang safety and the rebounding hammer in late model Winchester rifles. He also shows a fix with plenty of pictures to fix the problem.

Wow, I bet she kicks like a mule.
My old man loads for elk is 385 gr going 1700fps. You don't notice kick at all when shootin at Elk.
Thanks 1886, I'm going to try those REMs.

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
Well, I was alittle bored today so decided to take a look under the stock. I ended up cutting off the safty thing and rebounding hammer spring. I think it is a ton better and still has the safty first click on hammer. I loaded up 10 shells w/ primer only, They all worked. MY PAPPA IS GOING TO BE SO PROUD!!!!!

Re: PRIMERS AND NEW 86'S
Keep in mind that the safety first click on the hammer is not a true safety. If you pull the trigger the hammer WILL fall. Not very far, but it will fall. I used the trigger and sear from a Win 92/94 to see how they engage and cut the sear and notch to lock together like the 92/94 or pre-rebounding hammer 86.Sixgun jr wrote:Well, I was alittle bored today so decided to take a look under the stock. Oh Boy!
I can finally put away my gunsmithing tools--i.e, the tools that do FREE jobs!
Yes, young man, I am proud of you. After reading the above posts, everything was mentioned that I told you the other day--bad seated primers--grease in the bolt-rebounding hammer problem. Anyway, I will be more proud when you develop your own stinkin' load to shoot your elk with.
-----along with your own powder, primers, and lead
Good job dude--we will talk on a cast load for elk this coming November. You will be able to load a bit hotter than me-----------Yo Pappa

Hi Mike!
Sixgun Jr, I had problems with light primer strikes with the '86 I had. I have an article in the articles section with a how to with pics. I did basically the same as Mike all except the Browning trigger..... Been so long since I tinkered with the Miroku 86 I would have to go back and re read my own how to.
