Leading ?

Post by 4t5 »

Assuming proper bullet fit , is velocity or pressure the bigger culprit ?

Or the hardness of the bullet ....

Or the alloy of the bullet ...

Or the type of lube ...

Or the amount of lube ...

I see where manufacturers rate the bullets for a certain velocity , but you can get there with different pressures. Is the lower pressure load likely to lead less ?

Worst leading I ever saw was polygon glock barrel. Literal strips of lead.

I had worst from plated bullets in my Henry 41 mag. Not lead but copper plating.

There are so many variables to take into consideration.

If I’m having a leading problem I often try a faster powder. I suppose it bumps the bullet differently but I don’t know.

There's no doubt that different powders affect leading differently. Also, many commercial machine cast bullets are designed for relatively high velocities, otherwise their lube simply doesn't work.

I have eliminated most of my leading issues by fire lapping all of my larger bore revolvers and by using Glen Fryxell's bullet lube formula.

A really soft gooey lube like that black moly/beeswax will totally shut down leading in a variety of loads but it really doesn’t ship well.
