Marlin Jam

Post by Bogie35 »

Hey guys. I got my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington a while back and finally got around to shooting it today. I fired several Core-Lokts and Leverevolutions with no problems. Then I fired a Buffalo Bore 220 grainer with no problem. However, the next round didn't fire. When I looked, it was because the action had not closed completely. But when I tried to open the action, it was jammed. With a little more force, the unfired cartridge ejected. I attempted to load another round, but the action again didn't close completely. It was more difficult to open the action this time. When it did, the cartridge came apart, showering gun powder all over the bench and leaving the bullet lodged in the barrel. I dislodged the bullet with a cleaning rod. The only physical difference I could see between the Core-Lokts, Leverevolutions, and the Buffalo Bores was that the BB's overall length was slightly shorter. I admit that I'm a rookie with leverguns, but what happened? Was it something I did? What should I do?

Thanks!

The bullet is too large in diameter at the area that some call free bore /lead / bullet seat. Most Marlins have very little if any free bore ahead of the case before the rifling starts. Forcing a hard bullet into the rifling with the breech bolt is the cause of the problem you encountered.
My .35 Rem Marlin 336 is the same way. When shooting cast in it , it will be almost impossible to close the bolt on a hard bullet. If I shoot 30:1 alloy, NO PROBLEM and super accuracy is the result. :D

Hey Chuck. Can a gunsmith fix that?

Bogie35, Nothing realy wrong with the rifle. Its the bullet that dont fit properly. Yes a throating reamer can be used to lengthen the throat to accept a longer or fatter bullet or just find a mold that casts a bullet that fits right in the first place. Many guys would be happy to send you a couple samples.

I didn't mention that it was factory loaded ammo I was firing. I don't reload yet. Just kinda wanted the Buffalo Bore 220's to work out. But the Cor-Lokts and Leverevolutions worked great, were plenty accurate, and have all the power I'll need for South Carolina game.

I may need to mount a scope though. I've been a "point and click" shotgunner for the last 20+ years and I just realized today that I can't see anymore! At 100 yards the target was a blurr! :?

Thanks again!

What is the load for the rounds on the target and the range?

OS , If you are asking me, it was a Lyman 358015 bullet cast of 30:1 over 21.0 gr.IMR 4198 at 1413fps. Soft, fun to shoot and very accurate and enough punch for the small Columbia River Blacktail deer in this area that weigh average 96lb. on the hoof. A big one may push 130#
Range 50yd. Williams FP , Redfield Sourdough front. :D
