Took the smooth rifle out.

Post by Nath »

It's been ages since I took my .45" smooth bored repro Kentucky out to bag a pheasant on the wing with shot.
Yep you read that right. Comes up well for wing shooting.
Sure I missed a few but eventually got two .
I used about 50gn of 4f and 3/4 Oz of #5 shot.

Just something a bit different. I've owned this .45" for 7-8 years I think and it's never failed .

nice wing shooting!
3/4 oz in a .45 must make a long shot column.

Now that's interesting hunting and shooting Nath, well done! I've been contemplating getting me a 20ga smoothbore for several years, a custom made, but I keep doubting how much I'd use it compared to cost. But I'd love it with shot for squirrels by all means, and a solid ball for deer, good all around a fowler is! And we got plenty turkey, be fun for that!
Enjoyed the pic, looks like maybe a Filson wet weather hunting coat?

I've had a couple of smooth bored .45s and they were good fun to hunt with, the smooth bore is mainly due to our stupid gun Laws in the UK, less hoops to jump through. One thing I discovered is how much a round ball will ricochet off hard ground  I used a similar load to yours with shot, mainly for squirrels.... :D

DD, it's a waxed cotton coat by Barbour.

John, this one works well with two balls and even five .36".

Nath that's something I never tried, I was happily surprised on how accurate they were with a patched ball, wish I had kept one of them, fun every time I took them out... 8)

Your 5 36s gives me an idea! Hey look at that, 2 .430 balls fit in a 28ga wad!
