Rossi 92 question

Post by pete-driver »

I finally got to shoot my Rossi 92 45 colt and now I have some questions. I fired my first shot and was hit across the forehead with hot gas. I opened the bolt slow and found the top of the case shiny but the bottom was covered with soot. This continued through the thirty rounds I fired. I'm using a 200 gr. cast bullet roll crimped over 6.5 of Trailboss.
Question #1 is this load too light to seal the chamber?
Next I was hitting high at 50yds. Had to take the ramp out of the rear sight to hit at point of aim.
Question #2 do I get a taller front sight or go to a 250gr bullet?
All of this keeping in mine I plan to get a Ruger Vaquero (or a pair), and I'd like to use the same round for both rifle and six gun. I appreciate you input.John

#1 Yes, The case is not obturating to seal the chamber. Many .45 colt chambers are way oversize and many sizer dies are to small compounding the problem. When I use trail boss in my rifles, I find the best and most accurate loads are pushing the book max.

#2 I would sort out the load first as point of impact will change some.
Have fun. :D

Looks like 6.5 is the max load for the .45 Colt in IMR data for pistol.
I would check into the chamber vs. sizer die to see what gives.
If it were me, I would go to a heavier bullet. Or try another powder if you are shooting CAS and want to stay with the 200 gr.

Try a 250 gr., tight crimp and a slower powder like Unique, etc.

The case is not sealing in the chamber.

You might also try a soft cast 200 gr. bullet 20/1.

Also slug your bore. If you are using a bullet not sized for your bore you will get blow-back.

I reckon that 'Ol Lefty is right about the bullet.I know that most CAS shooters where mygrandson and I shoot use as light a bullet and powder as they can and still get it to the target.I think any gun shooting .45 Colt rounds should be shot with a 250 or 255 grain bullet just because. They will seal the chamber better and feel good too. Unique is all that I have ever loaded for my guns.
