Mar-Shield finish on Marlin?

Post by jon1895 »

Hi-
I need to do some touch-up work on a Marlin 189SS stock, and I understand that Marlin uses a finish called "Mar-Shield". I don't see that this finish is available retail, so was wondering what I could use to do spot repair to avoid having to refinish the entire stock? Is Mar-Shield a varnish, lacquer, or polyurethane? Thanks,
Jon

In my opinion, mar-shield is a joke and should be taken off and replaced with nearly anything  To me, it looks like a Hershy Bar has been rubbed all over the wood.

Well, that was helpful but I'll be darned if I'll use my chocolate to rub down my stocks. If I did, how the heck would I keep my weight up.

As for "jon1895's" question -- Give Marlin a call and ask them what base they use for their stock finish.

Really......with the MarShield gone and some decent oil based finish, you can see the grain of your beautiful wood.

I called Marlin this morning, and all of the Techs that could answer the question are gone until 1st week of August, so I intend to check back with them. I agree about the Mar-Shield. I haven't seen that it protects that well, and intend on refinishing at some point with the oil - just didn't want to do it right now.

Believe it or not, Mar-Shield is an electrostatically applied finish.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Regardless, it does not spark my interest....

Not arguing with you about the aesthetics, but just wanted to post an fyi, about the extra work required to clean the pores out before refinishing.
