I know you've commented on this before - and if I could use the search function here with any small amount of competence I wouldn't need to ask - but I can't so I am! Thought about doing so via a PM, but figured others would probably like to hear the answers too!
Going to load up some .44 Russian for a Uberti "Colt 1872 Open Top" reproduction I have, as well as for my Taylor & Co. "Spencer 1865" reproduction. I'll hit the .45 Schofield soon for use in the Uberti "Schofield" reproduction. Just thought I'd pick your brains a bit on both!
For the 44 Russian, my favourite load is 12 .5 grains of 5744 under a 256 grain Keith bullet for 780 fps, an E.S. of 36 fps, and an S.D. of 13 fps. I've also chrono'd 9.5 grains of 2400 under the same bullet for 772 fps, an E.S. of 30 fps, and an S.D. of 15 fps.
For the 45 Schofield, my load was 19.1 grains of IMR 4198 under a 250 grain Colt bullet for 773 fps, an E.S. of 20 fps, and an S.D. of only 7 fps.
With a modern repro top break, you could push it up a bit higher to get at least 820 fps, but I don't push my originals that hard. My favourite 44 Russian is a S&W 2nd Model American that is 135 years old.
Kirk: An old geezer who loves the smell of freshly turned earth, old cedar rail fences, wood smoke, a crackling fireplace on a snowy evening, pristine wilderness lakes, the scent of
cedars and a magnificent Whitetail buck framed in the semi-buckhorn sights of a 120-year old Winchester. Blog: https://www.kirkdurston.com/
Sorry for the late response - was out the last two days attending a funeral. Thanks for the loadings. All will be in modern reproductions - for now. I hope someday to collect the actual classics like you do!!!
