Open or scoped sights for kids in deer season?
My oldest grandson loves to shoot. He has mostly shot open sights. Last deer season he could not find a deer with the scope and missed out on a ten point. I had it on 5 power. Should he use open sights first or stick with a scope? I learned on open and later when the eyes started giving out a little I turned to scopes for deer. I still hunt many a deer with open but know my limitations on distance.

I was started out on a scope, but I don't recall if it was either a 3x9 or a fixed 2x or 3x. Guess I should dig it out and find out...

If/until/unless the kid is capable and you are most likely to be shooting at 150yds+... Open... or at the most a holosight/acog.
But then, I yam what I yam.

Sounds like you answered your own question. You were trained up right.
Kind regards,

I believe that answers the question right there. He's used to open sights. Let HIM decide what HE wants to shoot.

If that situation where he missed the 10x was typical, then I'd say have him hunt with open sights.
Scopes are great for early morning and late evening (just before expiration of daylight) as they stretch your ability to make a clean shot at those times.
In heavily hunted areas where deer are very wary and seldom show themselves during daylight, a scope is invaluable.
If a scope is called for - dial it down to it's lowest power for him.
