Dang, for some reason the pics won't open. I sure hope Ruger-Marlin produces the high quality lever guns we've been waiting for.

Thanks Jim !
They sure do look like keepers.
So........how are they stamped on the barrel ?
Marlin = "JM"
Remington = "REM"
Ruger = ?

Glad to see Ruger is getting some rifles out the door! Have to admit that I don't care for the fluted bolt but if they work well and shoot like Mr. Taffin's example I really shouldn't complain.

Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
That Rifle looks well polished and "de horned" (all the sharp edges smoothed out ) . My only HOPE is that Ruger brings back the MXLR 30-30 and the MX and MXLR in 308 and .338 Express .....Had Marlin stayed in control I have no doubt that they would have brought out a 6.5 Express round as well. wait and See. .
Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
John Taffin says, "The left side of the barrel is marked: “MODEL 1895 45-70” while the right side bears the inscription “MARLIN MAYODAN NC USA” ...... Functioning is perfect, the action is smooth and there is no doubt this real Marlin will be eagerly accepted by both hunters and shooters."

Looks like Ruger is keeping its promise by getting rifles into the hands of our legendary gun writers before the end of the year.
I am sure happy to see that group. John Taffin, God bless you and Merry Christmas!

Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
The forward edges of the comb look weird like it was built with Legos. But otherwise a fine looking rifle. A lot of bolt actions won't group like that

Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
It's a business, profits are mandatory. Either production efficiency is increased or prices passed to the jobber, dealer, consumer. They had a 100 yr. old factory and a bunch of old guys that knew just how to make things work. Now it's all gone and has to be started over with new guys that experience began in perhaps the 1980's, maybe!
We get nostalgic and forget we are consumer shooters in a marketplace. Factories must focus on profits first or the end will be forthcoming.
THE GUNS ARE NOT GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE.
THE DOLLAR IS CONSTANTLY LOSING VALUE AND IT WILL GET WORSE.

Truer words were never said. Tack onto this the relentless efforts from the Communists to try to sue manufacturers out of business and you have additional expenses that must be borne by the consumers.

Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
I bet the real world price will be around $999.00 once the dust settles. If the quality is there and Ruger didn't cut corners they would be worth it. Lord only knows how much Ruger has to pay employees to make Guns today.
Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
No- guns are getting more expensive. When a used, safety button Marlin that was $400 on Williams, 18 months ago is now $975, that's a price spike. It has nothing to do with a devalued dollar or inflation. The first rule of business is Charge What The Market Will Bear and right now, the market is bearing it.
While the rifle under discussion is not my cup of tea, Ruger did a commendable job of reviving the brand and getting precisely built and accurate new Marlins out the door. Tip of the hat to them on that.

Sarge .. you are correct especially about the used gun market. I did not make it clear but I was thinking of the manufacturers when I said that. For newly produced guns, the cost of everything associated with it continues to require more dollars. I was in Mexico when the Peso devalued. It wasn't pretty. I was in Mozambique when the Metical lost 50% of its value. I believe you know all this but for some readers we do need to be reminded.Sarge wrote: ↑Wed Dec 22, 2021 1:28 pm No- guns are getting more expensive. I agree with you about inflation's effect on consumer goods, Jim.
The whole centerfire lever action market, new and used, will be worth watching as they revive the 336 and 1894 series. In my opinion, one of the best things Ruger can for for the brand is make a top notch 1894 with a 1:20 twist in 44 Magnum. I also expect the price of their blue/walnut guns in 30-30 will settle in a bit lower than this 1895.

Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
I agree fellas, on the Like button and 94's in the various revolver cartridges. The demand for them here in the middle of the country is voracious. I really only want one more, (like one more helping of biscuits and gravy) a 44 Mag and I haven't quite decided what yet. Money is a factor and I've always favored the 92 and its better copies in that role.

It will be interesting to see if there are any bugs in the early production guns. I wouldn't rely on gun magazines to give me an honest review.

I wouldn't rely on the gun rags either to give us a really honest evaluation. They are mostly just paid mouth pieces for the gun manufactures. I do hope Ruger gets it right, this time.
Marlin was starting to get it all lined out, this second time around, before they got shutdown the last time. I have one in that configuration, short 45/70 with Scout rail and now with scout scope and it's probably the best Marlin I ever owned. I bought it new, about a year before they went down.

I would definitely like to get another Marlin one day. However, I will wait to see what quality Ruger produces. Right now the market is OUTRAGEOUS as many have stated. No it is not inflation, it is gouging.
Gun Control is not about guns, it is about control!
Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
I predict the marlins will be offered in limited runs like the no. 1 are. I dont think they intend to compete with henry. I also think its a sad state that a laminated stainless guide gun is the predicted money maker of marlins extensive and highly acclaimed past catalog. Heck i was hoping for a new 1881 to pair up with a vaquero for cas lovers.
Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
I suspect Marlin will take awhile to get production moving the way it needs to and reintroduce their signature lines of leverguns.
Hopefully they'll bring back numerous "limited/exclusive runs" of unique rifles like they used to do for Davidsons.

Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
yeah, I would have thought for sure that the 336C would have been the first gun out of the gates. Also, I don't see the model 444 MARLIN in their online catalog. I hope they revive that one as that's the one big bore gun that I hope to own one day now that my dreams of owning a win 71 have been forever crushed by insanely escalating prices. Used 444s are now selling for what 71s were getting only 10 years ago.Galloway wrote: ↑Wed Dec 29, 2021 3:24 am I predict the marlins will be offered in limited runs like the no. 1 are. I don't find the current prices unreasonable and should be cheaper at "real world" prices except for the very hard to find items. Every gun out there is worth 1K now, at least in my small collection. Even my #4 Mark 1* Enfield that I payed $300 for years over a decade ago. Weird. -Tutt

Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
I don't think I paid more than $100 for my Savage. I wish I'd kept half the stuff I bought in the '90s. We were buying Enfields, Nagants, Mausers 5-10 at a time for $65 - $100 each. I held on to the more unique pieces, but was always trading. We bought six SVT-40s for $275 ea. My dad and I each kept one and sold the rest. Last one I saw on GB went for $3K. The days of the $400 Marlin or Winchester are long behind us.

GunBroker has a number of these guns available for ridiculous prices.
Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
I’m amazed I bought a pre safety 444S this year for $400. Dirty consignment guns can be a real bargain sometimes.
Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
I think the new Ruglins are stamped "RM" (Ruger Made).
I think the microgroove barrels are gone in the 336s and will be replaced by Rugers own kind of rifling.
Hope Ruger decides to make takedown model 336s, 1894s & 1895s in the future.
To be fair the later made Remlins were pretty decent.
I have a late 2017 manufactured Remlin 336SS in 30-30 that's going to be hard to beat for out of the box fit, finish, workmanship and accuracy.

I saw a North Haven, CT made "JM" stamped Marlin 1895G Guide Gun with the original style ported barrel in respectable but not spectacular shape go for $1600 last week.

Give me a straight stock 336 in 30-30, American Black Walnut stock!
Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
Dang! That's a good deal, and is my favorite 444 version. I've always kind of hoped to get one made in 1977 which is my birth year.
I bought my first center fire rifle in about 2002, the first year that I lived in a rifle county (having grown up in a shotgun only county). I thought I wanted a winchester 94 but wasn't impressed with the 94s that I was seeing on the gun racks, so I looked at the marlins and was much more impressed with them. I remember trying to decide between 30-30 and 35 rem. I settled on the 30-30 and bought a brand new 336C in 30-30 for $350. 2002 doesn't seem like that long ago, but I guess it is now. That 336 is an awesome gun and has dropped every deer I've put my sights on, including one really impressive running shot in the woods.

I guess I'm missing your point. I didn't say anything good, bad or indifferent about either. I have several Winchesters and Marlins of different vintages. A lot has changed in the last twenty years. I bought a Colt Python around 2002 or 03 for $500. Can't get anywhere near that now. Not to say that there are bargains to be had, but you're going to have to look for them. I'm looking forward to the Ruger Marlins and ! have to pay $1k for a good rifle, I'll do it. Won't be the first time.

Re: From John Taffin - THE RUGER-MARLIN IS HERE!
I'm going to wait a year or so after initial production of Ruglin 1894s start before buying one in 44 Rem Mag so the major wrinkles will be ironed out at the new factory.
Hear that Ruger won't be going with investment casting in their new Marlins ... that's good news if true.
I also hear that microgroove rifling is gone the way of the dodo in the new Ruger 336s.
I have a late manufactured Remlin 1895GS and a 336SS that are serving me well and a Taylor Alaskan stainless takedown trapper model 92 in 44 Mag I have no complaints with.
"Once burnt, twice wise" as the saying goes.
Most who bought the junk Remlins made when Remington took over Marlin won't forget the experience and learned from it.
I'm going to wait until I have the advantage of 20/20 hindsight before springing for a Ruglin 1894.

I was just agreeing with you that the day of the $400 marlin or winchester was over. I was just saying that I bought an awesome new Marlin in 2002 for $350, and that 2002 didn't seem like that long ago to me, but I guess it is, and that gun prices have gone up a lot in the last 20 years if $350 guns are now $1000. That's my whole point.2ndovc wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 7:13 pm I guess I'm missing your point. I didn't say anything good, bad or indifferent about either.
