Got my new Henry Big Boy in .357

Post by Levant »

I just got my 4th ever and 3rd in current inventory lever gun: a Henry Big Boy in .357. It's a beautiful gun; the wood on the stock and forearm are both beautiful pieces. The brass makes for a great looking rifle.

I have been wanting a .357 lever gun for a long time. This is my first lever gun in a pistol caliber. I still want a Marlin, a Winchester, and a Puma or two but the Marlin and Winchesters are scarce, the Pumas seem plentiful, but the Henry was available but not widely available - therefore it seemed like I should get it now while I can, and then start on the rest of my wishlist.

I just wonder how many thousands of rounds I will have to shoot before I am good enough with the gun to even show my face at a CASS shoot.

It will be a couple weeks before I get to the range with the gun but a range report will be forthcoming.

Congratulations!
I see the retail on those on the Henry website. They list the retail price as being $879. I was wondering how close that is to what you paid? I'm really looking at the .22 Mag pump and trying to think of it in relative terms.

Thanks,
Rusty <><

What sites I could find the gun online for were all in the $670 to $730 range. Add shipping to those prices and a $25 paperwork fee for my local brick-and-mortar shop would have brought the range to $725 to $775-ish. Considering my local brick-and-mortar shop is local and I need for them to remain in business in order to buy any guns, either locally or online, I would have gladly paid them $750. I was really surprised when they charged me $689 for the gun and since I bought it from her instead of online, there was no shipping charge or paperwork fee. I'm real pleased with the outcome.

My 1894C Marlin is more fun than I could have imagined. It shoots any 38 special and 357 magnum factory ammo very well. Reloading is cheap and easy, too. I hope the rifle gives you as much joy as mine gives me.

I know that these are good, American Made guns (and congrats on your new purchase!).

I must say though that they really need to spend a little money and hire a marketing manager....

"Big Boy"?

Good Lord, that sounds like a new kind of diaper or something.

And maybe next fall, I'll get to use it on some of these when they grow bigger. This is outside my bedroom window about 2 hours ago. Two spikes, a doe, and two fawns.

The 357 lever is perfect for that task. You may want to test your ammo within the ranges that you may take your deer. I've found that the bullets in some factory loads disintegrate at close range at the higher velocities that the longer barrel develops.

Don't those load from the mag tube?

If you take it hunting, that would make it easy to unload your unused rounds at the end of the day. Sounds like a nice convenience to me.

More difficult to load if you're shootin' at Injuns while on horseback but I don't do that much anymore.

I only handled one Henry, the Golden Boy in .22 cal. I sort of regret not getting it, it was beautiful and balanced very nicely. I went with a Marlin 39 which I have had a fair amount of trouble with.

They do load from muzzle end of the magazine tube - sort of like most tube fed .22's including Marlins and Henrys. That seems to be a negative for the Henry but not so much as to keep me from buying one. The magazine issue will probably mean that I don't use this gun in extended firefights.

I have a .22 Henry also. It is a very nice gun to shoot and very sharp looking.

I don't know how much easier the Henry would be to unload than a Marlin; you can just rack the lever on a Marlin repeatedly to empty it. No trying to prop the rifle barrel while gripping the stock between your feet and unhooking the tube while hanging between 17 and 22 per cent of your tongue between your front teeth.

Yes, but I like to keep the rounds out of the chamber if I can; plus they are extracted with some force and some of them miss my hat (which I am trying to dump them into). The tube style you can just pour them in there. Small point.
