Minimal Levergun Peep Sight Idea - Update:Sight-in Info

Post by Pete44ru »

I mounted this Williams WM-96 Peep (adj for W&E ) on my Henry by drilling/countersinking a hole in the sight's forward tongue for an 8-32 attachment screw - then D/T'ing a single hole for the screw in the receiver top, and also a slight dwell where the elevation screw bears, to keep the sight from straying to one side or the other.

The top of the Henry receiver, above the scope dovetails, is flat - and that got me to thinking.

I could just as easily have mounted the sight atop my Marlin 1894, in the forward rear scope mount hole.

Or, on ANY levergun with a flat receiver top ( or BOLT top ala Win M1895).

Food for thought.

In the meanwhile, here's some better (?) pics of the installation:

[EDIT: 7/9/08 - For those interested, I finally got to the range yesterday morning, to sight in this puppy. Since it seemed right on mechanically, I opted to take the first shot @ 50yds.
POI was 4" left, and 5" low - basically 7:00 o'clock, just out of the black.
A single adjustment session, consisting of sliding the aperture a few hash marks to the right, locking it's gib screw and then two turns up/in on the elevation setscrew - and I was ready for the next try @ 50yds.
The next shot(s) were all dead-on at 6:00 o'clock, a half-inch below the X-ring. Good to go, since I don't think I'll be taking any peeped .22 shots beyond that distance.]

That's a real neat idea. Pity my 9422 is not flat between the scope grooves.

Good thinking Pete. I'm going to try one, if I like the looks on my 1886 I'll d&t for that sight. Looks like it sits pretty low, which I like because high sights break the cheek weld on the buttstock.

Good on Ya !!

very well done; a peep sight like that doesn't mess up the lines of the rifle or hang up on things like the side mounts,
good idea and good execution of the idea!

You brought up a good point, Grizz - and one that I forgot to include.

Before I D/T'd my gun, I made a little "sticky-side-out" tube of masking tape, by wrapping it around my little finger - effectively giving me a thin piece of double-sided tape (the thin blue line under the sight in the 2nd pic from the top), when I pressed it flat against the bottom of the sight.

The tape, hidden under the sight, held it securely in place while I decided my druthers.
