Beaded Rifle Sheaths for classic leverguns

Post by hfcable »

some years ago, I got a friend to have a beaded elk hide brain-tanned sheath made that i could use for a sharps repro and for my 1881 marlin; his brother is a retired history professor living in Taos and in nebraska; after a couple years wait i got it, made by a Sioux lady in her 70's with her daughter helping:

Image

it is very heavy and long enough for either of those rifles, and was worth the wait and price; this got me watching out for them and i picked up several more:

This one made by a young lady in Idaho, was her first attempt, copying a pattern on a museum piece made by her Nez Perce ancestors:

Image

this one is said to be Cree and is quite old and fairly dry but spectacular and good for displaying with an antique rifle:

Image

this one uses patterns like those used by my Cherokee ancestors:

Image

this is probably also Sioux:

Image

this one's style i dont know yet:

Image

this is a small , flashy little one, maybe for a kids marlin 22 levergun?

Image

and this is a fairly uncommon item, used to store a sword and scabbard:

Image

Image

i am off this week and doing some cleaning and organizing so took these photos to document these for my son; i have another one [cant find it right now] and some beaded holsters, and knife sheaths too,
anybody else like this stuff,? it sure goes well with our leverguns and sixshooters, and knives.
i think i am a hopeless pack rat/ collector.

Very cool. My mother's a registered Native American. Unfortunately I'm only an eighth so I can't enroll. But I love most all things Native. I'll have to get a picture of a jacket I made with deer skin. It's very heavy.

Are theyall beads? A couple of them look like porcupine quills.

yes, except for a little quillwork on the cree fullbeaded sheath; i really love the quill work. here is a couple of quillwork items that are copies of items from the late 1600's to early 1700's, good for using with flintlocks, etc a possibles bag and very nice knife and sheath:

Thank's cable, the quill work is about as pretty as you can get. I have done some bead work through the years but my old fingers don't really want to sew leather now let alone do bead work. Got to make my grandson a knife sheath so he'll let up on me.

well, there is a huge porcupine around our cabin, lately; if he shows up this weekend, i am going to 'liquidate' him and i can send you the quills! or the whole porky frozen i guess!

Harold -

That is one awesome collection of fine Native rifle sheaths. Thank you for sharing. Family lore has me having some Sioux from my father's side and Commanche from my mother's side. I love Native America crafts and weapons!!! :D

Very nice collection.

I've liked bead work for a long time. Fun to go into the Cody Museum and see their pieces.

I made a carbine sheath 20 some years ago. It isn't quite as pretty as most of yours. I only put a little beaded trim on it, and it's been slowly coming off as I use it. The sheath was commercial deerskin, the cartridge bag was from a deer I killed.

Beautiful examples, Cable! Thanks for posting those photos. Malamute, I like your work as well.

WOW! Those are impressive! I don't have the patience to do bead work myself, nor the money to have it done, but love it all the same. Thanks for sharin'. Malamute, I've tried it, and appreciate the work that it takes to do just "trim"... very nice. Thanks for sharing, both ya'll.
