WHAT IS IT? ---SOLVED!!

Post by JimT »

THEY ARE 5-in-1 blanks!
I put on my reading glasses and realized I was looking at the markings UPSIDE DOWN! Looked like "IMI" to my old eyes. Turned around it reads "5-in-1" ... now I feel really stupid.

So they will fit .38-40 Rifle and Pistol
.44-40 Rifle and Pistol
.45 Colt

IMG_2497.JPG
OAL - 1.545"
Body diameter just ahead of the rim - .453"
Case mouth O.D. - .430" I.D. - .402"

.414 Super Mag? But the oal is a touch too short for it to be that.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Did feel like giving us a shot of the case head stamp I see. Off to Ken Howell's book of Customer Cartridges it is for me.

[edit]

OK, too long for .41 Remington Magnum, more searching ...

SORRY!! The only markings on the case head are: IMI and the manufacturer .. Starline. I do not know what they are so if anyone has an idea I will appreciate it. This was not meant to be a "stump the readers" test. I should have been more clear on my initial post.

If it had an extractor groove, it would be darn near a .401 Winchester Self-Loading.

I have gone from the imperial section of Howell's book into the dreaded metric section to see if it's there. The "IMI" might be Israeli Military Industries? Something for their Desert Eagle line?

Look on AmmoGuide.com and their 'cartridge identifier'.... :D

I just found out my membership lapsed so have to renew to look, but it has a great identification/sorting/organizing tool based on all sorts of dimensions.

Quite a lot of exterior taper for a pistol round. More than what I'm seeing is average for many American cartridges.

I think Mr. 3leg has it;

https://www.starlinebrass.com/414-super-mag-brass

My first though was 10mm mag, but it has a similar extractor groove as the .401 Winchester.

Problem is the .414 SuperMag is 1.6" long. These are short of that.

EDIT: Though it is a distinct possibility.

It's not in Howell's book from 1995. It might post date that. Of course, the .414 Super-Mag isn't in there either.

The mouth is similar to a couple of normal rounds such as .41 Long Colt. The rest of the brass is not right for that. I am guessing that it is some type of 10mm European round.

This case is too long for that .. closest thing I have found is the .414 SuperMag ... but it's a bit too short and it's bigger around at the base than the .414 ....

OK. That explains the Starline with IMI quite nicely. I was trying to wrap my head around Starline putting out something for IMI. I've seen the 5 in 1 blanks listed on the Starline page, but never paid any attention to them.

Used in the movies ... fits 5 different guns:

.38-40 pistol
.38-40 rifle
.44-40 pistol
.44-40 rifle
.45 Colt pistol
And most likely would work in a .45 Colt levergun making it a 6-in-1 .....

Edit - Original Remington 5-in-1 blanks

The flash hole size should've been a give away also. Needs to be a bit larger than a standard case so the primer isn't pushed back, locking up the gun, as there's no enough back pressure to reseat the primer as happens in a live case. I used a LOT of blanks when I was training my horses for the Sheriff's Posse and competing in cowboy mounted shooting.
