Rem RB or Trapdoor?

Post by awp101 »

Looking for what will probably be my last major purchase for possibly the next couple of years. Don't need either but here's the dilemma:

I ran across a .40-65 WCF Rem RB on consignment and the ad states:
1875 Egyptian Remington Rolling Block chambered on 40-65 WCF. Owner claims dies marked for C. Sharps are necessary. Round Douglas barrel with a 1-18" twist.
Pros:
I don't have one, has a new(ish) barrel, unusual caliber and I like unusual calibers.

Cons:
Another caliber to feed, can't see it in person, may have a custom chamber that would require more expensive dies, ammo not exactly available at the drop of a hat.

I've also found a couple of Trapdoors listed.

Pros:
I already have 2 other .45-70s, don't have a Trapdoor yet, US Military ties, $200-300 cheaper than the Rem RB.

Cons:
Can't see it in person, already have 2 other .45-70s, old barrels may be shot out and require more money to shoot well, no idea how tight the loading trap is.

Another possibility may be a RB in .50-70, same pros as the .40-65 other than having an original bbl which means it also has the cons of the Trapdoors and ammo not exactly at the local Mega-Mart. Priced between the Trapdoors and the .40-65.

Yet another thought is a RB action in 8x58R and rebarreling but again, even more money despite the fact they would be about half the cost of the fully finished firearms.

Paper punching, target plinking and possibly a hunt every couple of years would be the usages.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks! :D

I have both a modern Marlin 95, and a 1879 Trap-door. One has to be constantly on guard if you re-load your Marlin hot. So far I don't

That 40-65 WCF sounds like a custom rifle. If you like the caliber, it may be a bargin.

Rolling blocks in 50-70 can be challenging, since most have a larger groove diameter than modern molds are designed for.

Whats wrong with the Swedish 8X58r. Thats unusual. It would be equivalent in power to at least a 32-40. I don't know what the dies cast, though.

I vote for the Trapdoor...for the same reasons you are into the leverguns. American heritage, history, and actually the real gun that won the west. More Buffalo were taken with the Trapdoors for our troops than all the other "Buffalo" guns put together. The Rolling Block has some historical value, but not necessarilly the Egyptian motif. Surprised a bit by the .40-65Wcf chambering as most were .43 Spanish. I can tell you that being a buff of original TDs, I've found that the 459-405HB mould from Lee works well (drops at .460 +/- .0005 and averages 435 grains) with BP, I believe the hollow base is the key. As far as smokeless, any Trapdoor pressure load works, just don't use jacketed on original bores.

Nothing I suppose...it just doesn't grab me. :D

No fear of high pressure loads though, any of them will be BP only.

Here's my thoughts:
If you have a good working knowledge of reloading and have the strong desire to shoot very accurately, the RB will be a better choice.

If you take life easier, like to play and do not want to either get serious on the reloading or unable/unwilling to put the bucks out, the Trapdoor is a no brainer.

The Trapdoor will be much easier to sell when the time comes. Plus, if the bore is in good condition, (a must!) it will be a pretty darn good shooter, maybe not BPCR quality, but good enough to hit 12" rocks out to 3-400 meters.

Not many people want a gun that has been worked on or customized so the RB will be a hard sell. I have been to many gun auctions and have seen guns that people put 2K into and ended up selling for $600. ---------Sixgun

Dadgummit Sixgun, you're bringing logic into it...

The Trapdoor sounds like the better choice based on this:

The barrel condition is the only thing that concerns me since I can't lay eyes on it.
