Puzzle Four's New Sight (bolt mounted Williams)

Post by 20cows »

The nephew liked the sight picture of the Williams FP, but like me didn't like the chunk on the side of the receiver. I had a round-bottomed Williams I had picked up cheap on eBay a whille back and decided to see about putting it on the bolt.

I laid some emory over an uninstalled 94 bolt and made the bottom contour of the sight fit. I then took it to a better smith than myself for the drilling and tapping (I have better equipment now and may do the next one myself).

(Sorry about the horse stuff on the boot heel).

I took it out for a spin and found out the tall front sight really needs to be a little taller. I also found out the sight needed Lock-tite! (Already done, now).

Very nice! Is the sight the same width as the bolt? What model is it? I think I'd like to do that on my project too. Looks good.

The WGRS came out nice, 20cows.

Once upon a time, I did the same thing to a Model 1895 using an XS peep.

Another good idea was recently hatched by Dr. Tim - He's selling a peep ring with a threaded stud that's the same size as a scope mount hole/thread, with a locking ring. (in brass or blue, natch)
He calls it the Lo-Pro.
It's only adjustable for elevation, but it's a minimal sight, fer sure.

I bet it could be made even lower by using a thinner locking ring & shortening the mount stud accordingly, so it wouldn't fully penetrate the bolt/receiver.

I filed one of those flat also to mount on top of my 39A. That style Williams sight needs a tall front sight no matter what rifle it's on. The lyman receiver sights seem to be the least chunky . Looks great!

That's pretty neat!

How does the side/side movement of the bolt affect accuracy/repeatability?

I'm w/your nephew, I don't like the stuff hangin' off the side on receiver sights. That's clean looking. Can you see over the hammer @ rest?

20cows,
(Sorry about the horse stuff on the boot heel).
That's funny, I missed it the first time I read the thread.

Where did the stock on that 94 come from, I mean is it a commemorative stock or from some model? One like it would look really neat on my 94AE Trapper.

How high of a front sight did it take to get it sighted in?

IMHO, there's not enough "slop" in any of these bolts to make a gnat's butt worth of difference when shooting - these aren't benchrest target rifles, and that's a fact.

Uh, um, ah, have you looked at the ranch dog targets? I'm just saying,

I have no clue as to what the "ranch dog targets" are, and haven't seen them :?: - but I have seen, up close & personal (as in: working on them) quite a few Winchester lever bolts over the last 40 years.

Sure, I've seen a little "slop", for operational clearances - but I've never come across one yet that was so sloppy as to noticeably effect the POI.

JMO, but if I was trying to solve an inaccurate levergun puzzle, the bolt fitment (not locking bolt fit) would probably about be the last thing I'd be looking at.

Pete, I was commenting about this statement, which is correct. But my corollary comment proves that the "not benchrest rifles" are capable of pretty impressive bench rest performance:

http://www.levergunpm.com/

on the left pane click on the 2006 button and look at the 100 yard open sight and scope targets. That was my point, pretty decent performance for almost any gun...

Sorry, Grizz - I misunderstood, and thought you were referring about my comment regarding "bolt slop" as being insignificant.

Yup, I agree that an iron-sighted rifle can shoot better than most shooters, myself included - when they're properly tuned, fed, & held.

The stock came from eBAy. The seller has one running all the time:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=019

It took quite a bit to get it fitted for some reason, but I came up with a nice piece of wood in the end.

You can see in the last picture the hammer does not interfere with the sight picture when not cocked. The sight is the same width as the bolt.
