Ever hear of the Eötvös effect?
Neither had I, but I had heard of the Coriolis effect. Lapua explains both.

Thanks Bill,
New to me, but as expected of no value for my hunting ranges which are mostly under 200 yards.

there is an Eötvös issue here:
not much use for me, I don't open my eyes until after the shot . . .
This depends what type of compass you are using, because magnetic bearings are NOT the same as the lat-long grid that is oriented to True North. Lapua is either assuming a digital compass that references True North, or confusing the two different reference points...North is 0˚, East is 90˚, South is 180˚ and West is 270˚. Naturally, you will get the exact value for the sight-in direction with a compass when you are at your firing point.

So, on my next ultra long range shot, I'll make sure I shoot East to West or West to East...

Well, the analog targeting system on WWII Battleships had an entry for the curve of the earth.

This only matters for very long range fire. Artillery, etc. The dynamics are interesting though.

So I can't use it as an excuse for missing a shot at a Squirrel.......
Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.

So that's why that shot on the last deer I killed was off to the right by .0000001"...

Probably deflected off a mosquito mid flight

Coriolis effect. Yeah, that's it. I knew I didn't miss that 50 yard target by 10 inches all on my own.

Re: Ever hear of the Eötvös effect?
True...I've read about it and guys at the club bring it up from time to time but the difference is negligible compared to other factors such as wind, right or left hand twist or b.c.of the bullet.
Sometimes on a dead still day, I'll be dead on out to 385 meters but at 500 I'll have to add a minute of windage to the left due to the bullet slowing down and a right hand twist.----6

Having lived south of the equator I can say that life is different there.
The water swirls the other direction when you flush a toilet or run water into the sink.
The moon appears upside down to those who were raised in the northern hemisphere.
There is no Southern Star though there is the Southern Cross which does not point South ... though you can use it to find south.
If you get within 1500 miles south of the equator you can see the Big Dipper at certain months ... very low on the horizon.
Headaches are common since you are standing upside down.
The Coriolis Effect makes you want to lead with your left foot if you are right-handed.
Hurricanes spin the opposite direction of hurricanes in the northern hemisphere and are called Cyclones instead of hurricanes.
Christmas is in the hottest part of the year. Santa wears a speedo and uses a Land Rover instead of a sleigh.
