I keep meaning to post this but never get to it.
Several weeks ago when we had Memorial Day, in our Sunday night church service the pastor asked everyone who had a family member die in the service of our country to stand up and tell something about that person.
One lady stood up and said that her father had been killed in New Guinea during WWII. Her husband stood up and said well. I didn't have a relative die but maybe you've heard of my uncle. His name was Alvin York. He was a Sgt. in the All American Division in WWI where they made him a Sgt.
After the services I went up to him to ask if I had heard right about Sgt. York being his uncle and he confirmed what I thought I had heard. When I got home I dug up my copy of the DVD starring Gary Cooper. The next Wed. I went and gave it to him. I told him that when I ordered this movie it was advertised to come with the movie plus an extra DVD with extra features. I gave it to my son for Christmas and when he opened it there was only one DVD. When I called they said they would send the other one out and they didn't want just the movie back. So I had an extra copy to give to the man at church. When I gave it to him I told him this is yours to keep, just do one thing for me. Make sure you show this to your grand kids so they all know who uncle Alvin was and what he did. We had a nice little talk in the time allowed. He told me he would have them watch the movie but he said. I know for a fact that there are a lot of things that happened that aren't in the movie. I told him that I knew that the movie was made quite a few years after the war because Alvin didn't want to give glory to what he did in the war. He wanted to give glory to his Lord. He said I know, because Hollywood would tell all the things that really happened. I asked him if he knew more of the story. He said he knew some of it.
We ran out of time but he did tell me that in the part of the movie where Alvin captured the machine gun nests before he could get turned around a German officer shot him in the back. The problem the officer hit Alvin and the rounds had no effect. When the officer saw the hits had no effect, he surrendered along with his troops. That was one of the events in his life that Alvin considered a miracle.
I'll try to find out more details as I can.

Wow! Very cool Rusty. As I understand it they hold the Alvin York longrifle shoot in Pall Mall, TN every year in honor of him. Truly one of America's best.

Very cool. Thanks or sharing that. Alvin York was a product of his generation and exhibited many characteristics that saddly are discouraged by schools and other big brother organizations today.
I've done my best as a father to try and instill some of Alvin York in my three kids.

Very cool Rusty!
I think I will need to buy that movie for my son. He enjoyed "To Hell and Back", the story of Audie Murphy, who was the most decorated US soldier of WWII (York was of WWI). These are real heroes - like our military men and women serving today - not the worthless entertainment and sports clowns that pass for heroes.
Thanks!!!
