Rifle shooting positions how to chart?

Post by J Miller »

A year or so ago ScottT started a thread about practicing shooting from field positions in order to become a more proficient rifleman. I am still intent on doing this, but now I find myself trying to remember how to get into the various positions.
Does anyone have a pictorial or a link to one showing how to do this?

I'm either loosing it; you know - you don't use it you loose it - or I've developed CRS.

TIA

Joe

John,

Thanks for the link. Those are pretty much what I remembered although the prone and kneeling are a bit different.
Now I just got to get limbered up some so I can get into them positions.

I found that the many stretching exercises were a big help when shooting from the various positions. Don't be dismayed if you don't have the stamina at first. You have to get used to some of them. E.g. my knees ache sometimes. And remember, Carlos Hathcock would sometimes split his burn scars in position practice (dry fire). Your experience should be relatively painless!
Sincerely,

Hobie

Some of those standing positions as practiced by some would not work with my 375 H&H AI or even our leverguns in 45-70 with a warm load. They are already leaning back too much, and the recoil would force them to step back or worse! :o

Your post reminded me I had pictures in my camera from two weeks ago. I just got to them. I'm in the fore ground then my friends Art and Dan. This was an M1A match, only six shooters showed up. Three in the pits and three to shoot then swap. John

I find that at 5'8" and 260#, some of these positions are simply impossible, but its starting to be annoying to carry a bench with me. :P

That is my problem too. Only 260 pounds was a long time ago.

Hey Joe maybe when I am out in Indiana over the next few years we can get together and I'll show you how we do them in the Corps. I am a Combat Marksmanship coach so I have a few tricks up my sleeve to get you into a position that will work for you.

That's an offer I'll be glad to accept.

I'm a crotchety old middle aged phart that lives with pain 24-7-365. Short of something disabling I just keep on keepin on.

Besides once I get into such positions, something that's hung up might break loose and make me feel better.

JReed, if I screw up just don't ask me to give you a lap or 45 push ups, that just might kill me.
