Don't know who wrote the words, but my brother put this to music many years ago. Hope you enjoy it.
Sermon In A Stocking
The supper's over, the hearth is swept, and in the wood fire's glow;
The children gather to hear a tale of the times so long ago.
"Life is a stocking, grandma says, and yours is just begun.
And I am knitting the toe to mine, and my work is almost done.
With merry hearts we begin to knit, and the ribbing is almost play.
Some are gay colors, and some are white, and some are ashen gray.
But most are made of many a hue, with many a stitch set wrong.
And many a row to be sadly ripped err the hole is is fair and strong.
There are long plain spaces without a break, which in youth are hard to bear. And many a tear is dropped, as we fashion the heel with care.
But the saddest, and the happiest time, is that we court and yet we shun,
When our heavenly Father breaks the thread, and says that our work is done."
The children came to say goodnight with tears in their bright young eyes. While in grandma's lap, with a broken thread, the finished stocking lies.

Very timely. My son-in-law's 94 year old grandmother died last Friday and was buried today. Although her husband died over 25 years ago, she was very active and was driving and volunteering 4 days a week at their local hospital until she fell and broke her hip about 2 years ago. A wonderful lady who has left a wonderful legacy.
Sincerely,
Hobie

I am of an age that my grandparents are all gone, except for the blessed memories. As my parents age, it seems my son and his cousins will face the finished stockings of them all too soon. If I could, I would give them my years for they are so much better at human kindness than I am. I will miss them when they are gone. I celebrate them now.
